Our brains are doing our best to help us out, but they can be real assholes sometimes. Sometimes it seems like your own brain is out to get you—melting down in the middle of the grocery store, picking fights with your date, getting you addicted to something, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. You already told your brain firmly that it isn’t good to do these things. But your brain has a mind of its own. That’s where this book comes in. With humor, patience, and lots of swearing, Dr. Faith shows you the science behind what’s going on in your skull and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately to the non-emergencies of everyday life. If you’re working to deal with old traumas, or if you just want to have a more measured and chill response to situations you face all the time, this book can help you put the pieces of the puzzle together and get your life and brain back. Here’s an excerpt from the book:Knowing what’s going on up in your brain is HUGE. So much of how we interact with the world around us is a completely normal response when we take into account our past experiences and how our brains work. • Freaking the fuck out • Avoiding important shit we need to take care of • Feeling pissed off all the time • Being a dick to people we care about • Putting shit in our bodies that we know isn’t good for us • Doing shit we know is dumb or pointlessNone of these things are fucking helpful. But they all make sense.Your brain has adapted to the circumstances in your life and started doing things to protect you, bless it. It’s not TRYING to fuck you over (even though it totally is, at times). As we navigate the world, nasty shit happens. The brain stores info about the nasty shit to try to avoid it in the future. Sometimes these responses are helpful. Sometimes the responses become a bigger problem than the actual problem was. It’s called a trauma reaction. And even if you aren’t dealing with a specific trauma? Adaptive coping strategies, bad habits, and funky behaviors all wire in similar ways. And research is showing that these issues are actually some of the easier ones to treat in therapy … if we address what’s really going on, rather than just the symptoms. I’m Torn. Pros: This book covers a very necessary, serious, and stigmatized area of mental health: trauma. It does a good job describing accurately & scientifically what happens to the brain on trauma, the effects and how to deal. More should be explored & written about this subject.
Cons: I have issues with the way it’s written. First, the Title Doesn’t Really Tell You It’s About Trauma. So people looking for that won’t find it and people who think this book is about something else will be out a few bucks. It’s written with the view that absolutely Everyone has gone through some kind of trauma & could benefit from this book. I won’t argue that, I can’t know.
The Language is not necessary. There isn’t a sentence not peppered with f-bombs and every other curse word. I have NO problem with cursing but this is overkill! It’s obvious the book is geared towards young people but if trauma effects all ages why write it like that? It’s comically full of urban lingo which almost discredits the intelligent and noble writer. Because it’s got a lot of valuable info., I read it, but it’s hard. I think even a teenager would roll their eyes at the writer trying to relate to them and sound cool.
By the time a lot of people get around to doing some self help reading they’re pushing 30 & up. It would be great if it were scrapped & re-written for everyone.
It also says, “I dont think young people are very smart & won’t be interested in reading something unless it sounds ‘woke.” That’s not what I’d want to hear if I were the target audience. In fact there’s nothing worse than an adult trying to talk like your generation when they’re not.
The other thing it says is, if you’re older than the target audience, this book won’t be useful to you, which is also untrue. So, kudos to the writer for delving into a serious much needed topic but please get an Editor.

Rubbish

The author’s use of mid-90s teen slang and overuse of profanity is incredibly annoying. It’s distracting to read about a serious subject that is overrun with childish writing. Please stop trying to be cool.

Very and Easy Read on Complex Psychological Concepts

The author/doctor writes how I talk in every day life with many f-bombs and gritty analogies. She does a wonderful job providing a crash course on what someone is going through when they are having panic attacks and then supplements facts with resources in case you wanted to learn more. I’ve used some of the techniques in this book and I trust what the author/doctor is trying to do, which is to help provide knowledge to people who feel lost.

Book was okay but there was a lot of foul language in it that really didn’t need to be there

This book is about finding the root cause of your “uncomfortable” feelings, challenging you to examine things in your life. Once you are able to identify the cause(s), you can then begin to deal with it/them properly, and start your own path to healing 💜💜💜💜💜

KUDOS to Dr Faith
December 17, 2018

Dr Faith has discovered a way to reach the rebellious youth crowd with valuable knowledge and entertaining writing style. I especially like her views on addiction. First treat the originating cause, then discover a replacement coping activity, then work on letting go of the addiction. Ahead of her time. I would like to see her expand her section on treating depression. While I consider this to be an entertainingly vulgar style of writing, I found I was able to stay with it much longer than I could have were she to have written in the more traditional staid prose.
