Cannot figure out how to download the lesson files.
January 1, 2022

I paid for and downloaded the Kindle version of this book but cannot figure out how to download the lesson files. I created an account at Pearson/Adobe Press but do not know how to find and provide a voucher code or International Standard Book Number. I can find NO instructions how to do this. Very disappointed in this purchase so far.

This has been a good investment for me to learn Photoshop. There are some issues with the instructions in the later lessons so it takes a little digging to get the intended results as the explanations are not always clear.

A Good Start

I asked my friend Scott, a fine-arts painter, what recent technological development most affected his works. I expected that he would say acrylic paints, but instead he claimed Photoshop. It allowed him to test his designs before committing to canvas.

Even though Photoshop is included in the same subscription package as Lightroom, and most beginning photographers would be better off learning Lightroom first, (and you might think graphic artists would use In Design), there are still some things that are most easily done in Photoshop, thanks to its selection and layers functions.

This is not a review of Photoshop. Instead it discusses an important way to learn to use Photoshop, a program that never knew the meaning of intuitive. Trying to learn Photoshop without help is foolish when Adobe has presented us with an excellent teaching vehicle. A photographer can download a series of files from the publisher’s website and then receive step-by-step instruction on how to convert a downloaded digital image into a better image by adjustments in tonality and color, among other things. (Graphic artists can also benefit from these lessons, although as a photographer, I can only speak to them in more general terms.)

What makes this book even better is the companion website, access to which comes with the price of the paper copy. The web version mirrors the printed text, but also includes short quizzes and videos that demonstrate the same text. Photoshop has a crowded interface, so seeing a video makes it easier to see what button is being pressed. For me the best part of the web version is that I don’t have to juggle a book while working on my computer, but just switch back and forth between on-online text and Photoshop.

There is one annoying aspect of using the videos. My aged eyes made me maximize the videos to full screen. When I minimized the first video I was returned to the top of the page. However, when there were more videos lower on the page, and I had maximized one of these, I was returned to the top of the page when I minimized the later video. I had to scroll down to return to the point from which I had maximized.

I checked out the 2022 edition against the 2021 edition and there were very few significant changes in the text resulting from changes to Photoshop. Experienced users may find it more economical to use the Help/What’s New tab in Photoshop to keep up with the latest changes.

Learning Photoshop isn’t easy. This book does a good job of introducing new users to the software.

Note: The publisher provided me with a review copy of this book at no charge.

Misconceptions:
May 30, 2022
As I was reading thru some of the reviews, I noticed several “misconceptions”. First, Photoshop is an Adobe product created for graphic designers. Lightroom was “born” out of Photoshop, not the other way around. Lightroom was created specifically with photographers in mind as most photographers when editing their photos, do not use/need/want all that Photoshop offers. However, having said that, Lightroom does not offer all that Photoshop has, so it is good to learn Photoshop first as many photographers who use Lightroom need to go to Photoshop to edit something that was not at their disposal in Lightroom.

Another misconception: InDesign is the old PageMaker. Adobe purchased the rights to this product and changed its name to InDesign, added many features that are new from the original. My husband purchased PageMaker for me about 25 years ago (prior to Adobe purchasing it). Cost was over $500 then. I loved it, but when I tried to use InDesign, I noticed there are several updates. This is a great program; I used it for creating books, etc. I’m sure there are now many more uses to be had.

If you are looking for some great tutorials, go to KelbyOne.com, where Scott Kelby, plus many other instructors have super videos on most anything Adobe… Scott, who is a graphic designer and photographer, says he uses Lightroom for most of his work…because it is easier. BUT often goes to Photoshop because Lightroom won’t do everything. Photoshop is awesome and almost always comes thru!!!

Not as good as it should have been
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 24, 2022

I bought this book having previously bought and worked my way through the companion volume on Lightroom which was good. The first thing that struck me was that the overall print quality of this one was nearly as good as the lightroom one and not what I would expect from a book with a retail price of nearly £50. The next criticism is the book tries to cover an extremely large complex program in the same sized book as the one covering the simpler Lightroom program so it can’t cover the topics in the same depth. The book needed to be longer to be effective, I fear this may have been a case to publishing to a price rather than the users need.
Personally I don’t find the writing style of this book as effective as the Lightroom one at explaining the working of the program, if this is a reflection on the different authors of the rather shallow approach they have been forced to take I am not sure.

Perfect way to learn Photoshop. You get the images used in the book by registering your copy with the publisher. Then work through each lesson at your own pace and as often as you want. In my opinion WAY better than YouTube videos as this is a big and complex subject.
