Top reviews

John ““The good news is that ADHD can be managed-and managed pretty darn well, at that.”

That’s a real line in this book. Full of Gee Whiz! Exclamations !!! Okely Dokely…

This review might not make it through…not “polite enough”. But how do you point out how useless something is …I could write a lot more. But why?

But if you have real ADHD…and want some answers…this won’t help at all.
Try Barkley Youtube “This is how you treat ADHD” to open your doors.

It reads like a publisher needed an Adult ADHD book (hot topic now)….
Found a writer (look he gave a TED talk!)…
The writer did a Google Search on the topic…and only chose information over ten years old
He thought giving juvenile exercises…to an audience that doesn’t do exercises…was a good idea.

It wasn’t
Bad idea.
But there is a huge audience that juvenile fits…many well educated, unhappy with life…on and on. Maybe it fits them. Or maybe it opens a useful door. But there are a lot better doors.”

Tasha “For background: I have combined type ADHD, I struggle equally with inattention and impulse control. I do have issues with overwhelm (mostly from sensory overload/overstimulation) but don’t have problems with mental flexibility.

Pros:
– I appreciate that most of the advice and guided exercises are written in list form. It makes it easy to flip through the book and find something you wanted to review.
– The advice is clear and actionable. It’s easy to see whether each exersise would be useful and how, and to adapt the steps to suit your specific needs/goals.

Con:
– I found the conversational style of the book’s main passages to be tedious to get through. The author seems likeable and all, but I bought this book because I can hardly get through the normal tasks of my life. I don’t need the advice to be fluffed up with asides and examples.

Grey area:
– The advice hinges on your ability to take notes throughout your day and to review those notes. I do appreciate that there are specific pointers about how to break up tasks properly into notes and what to write down. There are also some general tips about maintaining a notebook. It just seems like a bit of a stretch to me. If I could keep track of a notebook why would I be here? At the same time, I feel a self help book can reasonably ask the reader to make changes and put in work, so overall I’m not too mad about it.

There was no really groundbreaking advice in this book, but having it contained into lists I can easily reference in the future should be helpful.”

Happy Happy Hippo “Funny story. – I was driving to pick up my adhd meds when this book was delivered to me…. ADHD trip. Lol.

Overall, I like this book. I’m new to ADHD- I was diagnosed 6 months ago. For me, it’s a good book. I can imagine that for someone who had been aware of their ADHD and had been working to build skills -this may not be as effective? I’m not sure. But there are exercises in this book that I’m finding helpful as I’m still in my exploratory phase of, “oh that’s why I do that!” Or, “wait, wtf that’s an adhd thing?!” So keep that in mind if you’re trying to decide. He has a “Takeaways”- passage at the end of every chapter which is, [chef’s kiss] – so helpful! He gets me…us. -I do get distracted while I’m reading- I’m not sure if that will ever go away- but there’s clearly an effort in the way the book is laid out to maintain your focus. I studied layout and design- so I appreciate this small feature. Not all books are like this.

Also weird-but the texture of the book is awesome. Don’t ask me why. It’s plastic… but like…idk, I pet my book a lot.

Glad I bought it IRL and not the other audio/digital versions.”
