History of Sweden PDF -Did you know that Viking-age Swedes were the founding dynasty of what eventually became Russia?

In contrast to their Danish and Norwegian cousins, Swedish Vikings traveled east rather than west in search of riches, land, and power. The extensive river systems of Russia provided economic and military “super-highways” to the adventurers from the north, who journeyed down them all the way to the Black Sea and Constantinople in search of fame and riches.

The rise in TV shows and movies has renewed the people’s interest in Vikings, but the Swedish Vikings have been notably absent from these accounts. In Captivating History’s History of Sweden, you will learn more about these Swedish adventurers, along with other parts of Sweden’s fascinating history.

In this book, you will discover:
The Swedes’ fierce struggle to gain independence
The “Father of Sweden,” King Gustav Vasa and his dynasty that spawned some of the greatest military minds in Europe
How the Swedish Empire achieved success and expanded as far as North America
Sweden’s revolutionary war tactics and how that led to victories on the battlefield
Why Sweden adopted its famous policy of neutrality
The hero Raoul Wallenberg and his role in WWII
And much more!

Michael States “A nation famous for neutrality

One of the nations commonly recognized as part of Scandinavia is Sweden, this nation has played a significant role in world events for hundreds of years and at one time, was a considerable world power.

Captivating History provides some interesting facts about Sweden. Of the stereotypes, Sweden does find its roots in the Viking culture and has evolved into a nation with a high standard of living, a social welfare system, and withits neutrality, has some of the most technologically advanced weaponry in the world.

The publication starts with the Bronze Age and describes how bronze dominated the trade between what would become Swedish territory and future Denmark, as well as people around the Baltic Sea. Some information is shared about the Sami people who were the predominant indigenous people of the area and their interactions with other people such as the Svears and Goths.

Of course, the Vikings are a high focus in this release and some text is allocated to a discussion of the Christian conversion. A lot of detail in a three-to-four hour read.”

JJares “Before reading this book, what I knew about Sweden would easily pass through the eye of a needle. However, this is a fascinating story of a unique group of people. I learned that Sweden, along with Switzerland, is a neutral country (I thought Switzerland was the only neutral country). This is a well-researched and well-written overview of a dynamic country and culture. This book is a good, concise history of Sweden, with more photos and drawings than Captivating HIstory usually has in their offerings.

With little arable land, Sweden used trading to increase its country’s wealth. The author points out that the Swedish Vikings were more interested in settling on distant real estate, rather than pillaging — as the Dane and Norse Vikings. The Swedish Vikings even colonized Russia and Ukraine. This is an old culture and there were many struggles to create a nation.

The author did a great job explaining the concept of ‘ex-communication.’ Most don’t understand the concept fully. It was a terrible penalty used cautiously because of its significant ramifications. Because of Sweden’s close contact with Germany, they were caught up in the Protestant Reformation and had squabbles over removing the Catholic Church’s ties with the government. The comparison of King Henry VIII and Gustav Vasa (the Father of Sweden) showed the depth of the author’s knowledge.

This is one of the best of the Captivating Histories I’ve read. The author kept my attention throughout the story. Bravo!”

anna c “There were so many things I didn’t know about Sweden and this book provided a good introduction to its history. There is so much more to learn about the country and yet this book covers a lot of ground from the prehistoric era, the Viking Age, the spread of Christianity, the empire and the monarchy through the ages, the two world wars and the reason why they have decided to remain neutral, to the present time. Check out the bibliography for further reading.

I especially liked the chapter on famous Swedes especially Alfred Nobel and Raoul Wallenberg.
This would complement “History of Norway” and “Russian History”
