noname “Most of the books content tries to give an overview of the current state of the blockchain and crypto industry. This is done by summarizing a large selection of Wikipedia articles, blog posts or thoughts that have already been published somewhere on the Internet at the time of writing the book (probably early 2019). The rapidly advancing crypto and blockchain industry makes much of the contents of the book outdated, and the book therefore sometimes feels like a textbook from the last century. This makes the book involuntarily funny: Nothing is more amusing than the outdated facts that were considered untouchable wisdom in the good old days. This problem becomes particularly apparent because the authors do not present any new, independent thoughts or genuine insights, but are content with a summary of the status quo.
Moreover, the authors lack an understanding of the subject. By using a shared Excel spreadsheet as a metaphor for blockchain (p. 18), the authors show that they have not understood this technology even at the most basic level. A shared Excel spreadsheet is ONE file that many users access. It is therefore a central point of truth. If that ONE file is damaged, corrupted, or deleted, that central point of truth becomes a central point of failure, which is the exact opposite of Blockchain. It seems that the authors have not understood that Blockchain at best corresponds to a large number of identical copies of an Excel spreadsheet, distributed among many independent users, who in turn have incentives to maintain the correctness of their individual copy of the spreadsheet, with the goal of avoiding any central point of failure. The undifferentiated and sloppy use of the terms ‘distributed’, ‘decentralised’ and ‘shared’ confirms the impression that the authors themselves have not understood even basic concepts of blockchain.
It is particularly unpleasant that there are no references in the book. Although the text contains reference numbers to sources, these are not resolved at any time in the book! To see the references, you have to search on the authors’ website. The authors justify this unusual decision with the noble aim of keeping the paperback version slim. However, this noble goal did not prevent the authors from adding three additional pages to the book to promote themselves as speakers and to market their previous book. All this gives readers the feeling of being instrumentalised to increase the number of visits to the author’s website and thus supporting their efforts to promote themselves.
In summary, the book seems to me like a transcript of one of those infamous marketing speeches so often given at crypto or blockchain conferences: a few entertaining episodes and anecdotes about crypto and blockchain without depth or any intellectual pretension. You can get this kind of content on youtube anytime and in large quantities for free and then it is up to date at least.”
Mohd Khalif “The book gives a very quick overview of the most important blockchain projects as of the time the book was written.
Be warned: the book is very light on its coverage of technical details of blockchain technology and in some cases it is simply wrong!
In chapter 2 the authors claim that blockchain is similar to a gigantic publicly shared Excel spreadsheet. Unfortunately this claim is simply wrong! A shared Excel spreadsheet is a single file and therefore a single and central source of truth. If being corrupted or deleted, a shared Excel spreadsheet becomes a central point of failure. Blockchain is a distributed system without any central point of failure and therefore the complete opposite of a shared Excel spreadsheet. The very fact that Mehta, Agashe, and Detroja considered a shared Excel spreadsheet an appropriate metaphor for blockchain, show that they have severe deficits in their understanding of blockchain technology.
The explanations of asymmetric cryptography, digital sinaturs, cryptographic hash functions, consensus, blockchain data structure, immutability of blockchain data structure provided in the book barely scratch the surface and raise more questions than they provide answers. The authors’ undifferentiated and sloppy use of the terms ‘distributed’, ‘decentralised’ and ‘shared’ confirms the impression that they have deficits in understanding basic concepts of blockchain. Hence, if your goal is to truly understand how and why blockchain works, this book is definitely not for you!
To sum up, if you are looking for a quick overview on crypto and blockchain applications without need or interest in understanding how and why blockchain works, you may consider reading ‘Blockchain Bubble or Revolution’! But if you truly want to understand how and why blockchain works you should consider one of the following books whose authors did a much better job in explaining blockchain: ‘Blockchain Science’ by Roger Wattenhofer, ‘Mastering Bitcoin’ by Andreas Antonopoulos, ‘Blockchain Basics’ by Daniel Drescher or ‘Mastering Blockchain’ by Imran Bashir.”
Ben “As an MBB consultant for the tech industry, I have spent a lot of time trying to get a good understanding of blockchain and its future. Bubble or Revolution is the only book I have read that does exactly this. It does a fantastic job of explaining how blockchain technology works (about one fourth of the book). I really like how the authors use creative metaphors to explain what is happening behind the scenes – I feel like I can now explain how tech works to a 5th grader.
The remaining three fourths of the book focuses on the use cases for blockchains and cryptocurrencies in the form of case studies and research (other books like Blockchain Basics spend 60% of the book explaining the tech in micro details that are irrelevant). There is a lot of thoughtful analysis when dissecting these case studies that helped me understand some of the shortcomings and weaknesses of blockchain technology.
I have read a lot of overly bullish books (like Blockchain Revolution), but Bubble or Revolution differs in that it offers frameworks for helping you understand in what use cases the pros of blockchain technology outweigh the cons. The authors do a fantastic job of making predictions on how major countries (e.g. China) and major companies (e.g. Facebook and Microsoft) will adopt blockchain and the reasons behind it.
If you are looking for an easy to understand overview of how blockchain works, why it matters, AND where the technology is headed from an unbiased perspective, I’d highly recommend checking out Bubble or Revolution!”
Anonymous “A thorough overview of the pro’s and cons of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, and blockchain technology more generally.
The book provides a solid overview of the concepts of blockchain (basically an immutable, transparent spreadsheet, stored and updated on all computers in the network). It delves into the ideas behind bitcoin, ethereum, various alt coins, and explores concepts such as tokenisation.
The book also examines the technical and social issues with public blockchains (e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereal, alt coins), and details why, at the moment, the more promising use cases for blockchain are in ‘private chains’ such as those used by Walmart (to track supply chain) and X-box (to track royalties).
The reason I docked a star was because, personally, I would have liked to have seen more macroeconomic theory and an explanation of the current fiat currency system including it’s innate problems (inflation, corruption, fincialisation etc.) and how blockchain proposes to fix these issues.
Nevertheless, the book is well written and provides the reader with a good fundamental understanding of what this blockchain stuff is all about.”
