Boomer “For the most part, I liked this one. The book deals with Mason, a teenager with autism, who is found at a murder scene covered with blood. Child psychologist Casey Walker works with local police to try and find out exactly what happened which brings her into conflict with Mason’s overprotective mother Genevieve Hill.
Overall there’s a lot of positives here. I liked Casey Walker, and the fact that she also has a child with autism gives her more credibility then just her profession. I don’t know much about autism and developmental disabilities but the material here certainly sounds very authentic and well researched. The author kept my interest throughout by telling an interesting story that moves at a fast pace.
It’s more or less a psychological thriller with a few procedural elements thrown in, but the procedural parts really aren’t realistic at all. We are after all, talking about a pretty brutal murder (of the mayor’s wife no less), with a very affluent family of high ranking connections involved, yet there’s only one detective who seems to be investigating. There’s no media, news reports, or anything else. Even in a small town, it’s hard to think this wouldn’t be a bigger deal. Casey Walker seems almost like a cop with her involvement, but she’s a civilian yet essentially acts with no police supervision throughout the story.
The ending, while not a cliffhanger, felt very abrupt. Nothing really on how things ended for most of the main characters which was disappointing. Would have loved to hear more about Mason in particular. I guess you’d call it a twist ending, but it wasn’t all that surprising to me.
Overall, I enjoyed this, The author is a good writer, and I appreciated an interesting story with no profanity. Genevieve in particular is a very well written character. There’s a few missed opportunities that make Under Her Care only a good book instead of a great one, but it’s still worth a look.”
