Reviews From Customers

C “This book is divided into six parts, with 46 chapters, and a total of about 294 pages, not including the Acknowledgments.

The main character is Dr. Maris Heilman, a college professor at Glenn State in Dayton, Ohio. Maris lives with her husband Noel, and her teenage daughter Cody. Most of the story is told from the third person perspective as Maris experiences the events; but there are a few chapters that are told from the first person perspective of a mysterious unnamed woman.

The book starts off with an intriguing hook right away in Chapter One: As we follow Maris through a regular evening at her house, the text actually cuts out mid-sentence to indicate a blackout:

“and took a
her hands rubbing circles over her cheeks as if the world had gone form complete black to light…”

The author uses this effect several times to powerfully demonstrate the blackouts that Maris is suffering from. The narration will be in the middle of a sentence and then cut out, leave a break of three dashes, then resume in a completely different context. I thought that this was a really clever touch, as it gives the reader a jarring experience that mimics what Maris must be feeling. The stress for Maris is only made worse by the fact that she is a recovering alcoholic, and she worries that everyone else will think her blackouts are caused by her starting to drink again. Unfortunately, as much as I liked the text-blackout gimmick, I found the rest of the book to be pretty disappointing.

As the story progresses, the plot seems to get less and less believable, and by the end I was regretting that I had spent so much time reading this book. With such a clever hook and blackout mystery, I had hoped for an equally clever and twisty plot, or brilliant use of characters, or a fantastic ending…. but I finished the book and felt some combination of cringe and disappointment. There are themes that this book leans into VERY hard, and by the end it just felt almost like a caricature of real issues.

Overall I guess I’d give this book a 3/5. I have to give some credit for the way the author conveyed the confusion of blackouts and lost time, and I was curious enough to keep reading. I personally didn’t really enjoy the rest of the plot or the ending though, and I thought the overall message was a bit heavy-handed. This was definitely not one of my favorite First Reads, but everyone has their own preferences, and you might feel differently.”
