The information in this book helps you recognize what stands in the way of your creating and then offers concrete guidance to move beyond those obstacles.

I found two of the concepts particularly meaningful for me. The first one is the importance of trusting myself. In fact, “trust yourself” has become a daily mantra that helps me act in spite of pesky self-doubt.

The second is the idea of zero to one. I won’t try to explain it here…just read the book. It’s well worth it.

Dr. Nancy Hillis describes numerous fresh methods of boosting the creative process in almost all of her emails, blogs, Facebook posts, and several books. A career fine art painter, finding myself increasingly into the doldrums, plodding along with a go-nowhere painting career, the concept of the Adjacent Possible leaped out from earlier works by Dr. Hillis as a way into finding and renewing creative energy.

The Adjacent Possibility demonstrates in geological and biological evolution in nature, the smallest change can lead to infinite change, stone by stone, degree by degree, cell by cell – from climate change to changing species of plants and animals.

In creative activity such as painting, composing music or dance choreography, if a single stroke, note, or gesture changes, all the rest of the composition will be altered accordingly. The author is a psychologist as well as an award winning abstract artist. The book delves into the blockages that artists often feel, and provides insight into the evolution of those blockages, and ways to counter them. The mantra ‘trust yourself’ is overwhelmingly positive and supportive. I am going to trust myself more.
