Harvey Fierstein was born to entertain
March 4, 2022
Thank you, Harvey. The world is so screwed up right now and your book comes out in the nick of time. I can’t shut out the horrors in the world, but I can take a brief respite to read your delightful, heartfelt memoir. Your truth and humor bring tears to my eyes. I don’t know if being from the 5 boroughs makes this book more relevant to me, but I hope those who grew up outside of NYC can find humor and insightfulness from your words.

A Must for Fans but Others Not So Much
March 15, 2022
I was introduced to Harvey Fierstein’s work via the film version of “Torch Song Trilogy” and have been a big fan ever since. I gave this memior 5 stars because every true fan should read it, but I caution casual fans of theatre that this may not be for you. I had expected a collection of charming theatre anecdotes more in the vein of Nathan Lane; what I got was closer to John Waters’ Divine-ate-real-dog-poop storytelling. The author focuses on his sexuality and the mounting of his theatre productions (no pun intended). His experimental theater days were filled with shows featuring giant genitalia and various bodily functions on stage, which is difficult to un-know (much like Divine’s doggy meal). The stories of his shows are mostly full of names that only theatre professionals would know, and they stress the process of getting a show produced rather than fun backstage gossip. I will always wish the author well and he is a major talent, so decide how dedicated you are before trying this book.

A Wonderful Memoir
March 9, 2022
This memoir is a joy; it’s Harvey Fierstein naked for the world to see; brilliant with a problem that he conquers. He is catty, a bit, but so full of love for almost everyone he works with. The one person he admits was a genuis but an ugly, nasty soul he paints so true to life it’s actually a laugh out loud moment when you flip the page and see his picture. He looks like a wolverine ready to attack an injured doe.The photo of him berating a famous actress at what should be a happy celebration tells you all you need to know. Fierstein is so honest with/about himself at times it hurts.A national treasure has written a wonderful memoir.

funny ain’t always funny

This memoir is filled with wit and funny that is a layer a lower covering a serious observation of self. Looks backs at oneself with smiles.

Harvey at his brilliant best
March 20, 2022
Although I am a few years younger than Harvey, reqding his Memoir became a trip through my own life’s memories. Partly because I too was born and raised in New York City, partly because from Torch Song onwards his plays and musicals have been highlights of my theater going life. I found myself sharing his laughter, his anger, his pain. This is the most entertaining theatrical autobiography since Moss Hart’s Act One, but infinitely more honest and moving. Thank you, Harvey, for one of the best reads of a lifetime.

Very Honest
March 19, 2022
This memoir was honest and frank. Mr. Fierstein did not sugar-coat anything about himself nor did he “dump” on others. I liked that. I did not know the extent to which he was involved in writing, acting in, and shepherding so many productions. I have greater respect now for this very talented man.
