Digs into the structure that makes AMZN work- Highly recommend

Excellent book that really gets into some practices that we’ve all read about, but not fully understood what makes them work. For example: 2 pizza teams. These sound great, but only work when the teams can function independently and don’t rely on other teams. Instead of increasing communication, AMZN reduced it.

There is great history here, and a good look at AMZN’s core practices. But the book also shows that you just can’t introduce ideas (2 pizza teams, Single Threaded Leadership, 6 pg memo’s) without the culture and structure that allow them to work. With Andy Jassy’s recent promotion it’s good to read about the genesis of AWS.Working Backwards Insights Stories and Secrets from Inside PDF
The book is well written and meaty – not a lot of old bromides and biz speak.

Kindle Preview Would Have Been Worth The Purchase

Never was an ian or really read an entire book centered on their practices; my mistake. The authors presented such a solid fundamental approach you are surprised there are not more people waving the flag.

After explaining the approach they present basically a few case studies to show not only the success of the method but the struggle before, during, and after the approach had been used. Proving like any other successful system used and Eisenhower so famously put, “In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.

I have read the book twice and listened to it at least once and some parts twice. For a decade, I have written a press release for projects and/or marketing campaigns and utilized the Backward Planning methods of McTighe and Wiggins. Also, have been a strong advocate of Jim Collin’s work. If you choose to read the book you will instantly see the connection. During my career, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to serve in senior leadership roles at leading tech companies including Microsoft and Apple. I also had the good fortune to be recruited by Bill to join when he led the company’s digital music and video businesses and the honor to be part of that amazing team and journey. Bill epitomizes everything that is great about and I am very pleased that he and Colin have invested the time and effort to create this book to share their learning and experience for the benefit of others. Working Backwards deserves to be on a shortlist of business books that matter.

’s culture is remarkable, and is undoubtedly one of the best-run companies in the world. As Bill and Colin describe in their powerful book, this is the result of an incredibly well-designed and engineered approach to building value by enabling and empowering teams, focusing on serving customers with a long-term view, and being relentless in that pursuit. Building such a culture is challenging for any company but doing so at the scale and breadth of is nothing short of incredible. This culture and customer focus have fundamentally changed the world in so many ways and raised the bar for all companies in terms of how customers now expect to be treated.

What I can tell you is that Colin and Bill have distilled the essence of the key patterns that I think made the success that it is, and in a way that’s easily adapted to almost any business or domain.
