The Authors
Durenda has been married to Darryl for 31 years. He wanted two children and she wanted ten. They compromised at eight. Their kids were born between 1991 and 2004 and now range between 16 and 30 years old. Two have attended college and one graduated in 2016. She chose to home educate her children when her first one reached preschool and has never looked back. Now, with over 25 years of experience, she has taught each of her children through high school with only one left to graduate. Three of her children are married and she has six grandchildren who are also being homeschooled. During her years of experience in home education, she’s seen first-hand how kids learn naturally and effectively when they are given time and space along with encouragement to trust their own learning processes. Thus, it is her heart’s desire to take this hard-earned wisdom and mentor moms, encouraging them to trust their God-given instincts when it comes to raising and teaching their children. She believes an encouraged mom is always a better mom.
Durenda began a podcast for this purpose in July 2017, called The Durenda Wilson Podcast, which has grown quickly and gained recognition with both families and leaders in the homeschooling community. A weekly podcast, Durenda has recorded over two hundred episodes with almost half a million downloads. She covers a variety of topics including homeschooling children with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, struggling learners, homeschooling through high school, unhurried homeschooling, dealing with anxiety, parental rights, talking to our kids about tough topics like pornography, general parenting, preparing our kids for life, screen time, the difference between homeschooling boys and girls, and much more. M.J. “When you homeschool… well, no matter what you do so long as you care about your kids that is, you are always worrying about your kids education and well being. Are they getting what they need? Will they be able to make it? Are they safe and happy? These and many other questions run through the minds of stay at home mothers and fathers constantly! But no one feels more responsible for the answers to the questions and worries like a homeschooling parent does. This little book really helped me to relax and calm my inner worries which had gotten so bad I could barely stand the day. I can’t thank Durena Wilson enough for writhing this book. It helped me to set aside my worries and just let the day unfold. I still worry, but I let myself take a breath and soak my brain in the knowledge that my kids are doing just fine. I’m no longer terrified that my kids wont be at “grade level”, a level that keeps changing anyway. As long as my kids like to learn, That is what matters most :)”
My copy is covered in highlights and completely worn out from being propped open when I read while I nursed a baby!

She clearly knows what she is talking about. More importantly, Durenda uses that experience and wisdom to help homeschool parents to determine what is important in their homeschool. I LOVE the portion on page 23 where she says
Please don’t let anyone guilt you into thinking that true homeschooling never involves outsourcing any of your kids learning. Remember, the heart of a homeschooling parent is to facilitate what God is orchestrating in their kids’ lives.
That portion of the book is what really got me. I really appreciate that Durenda repeats over and over again to listen to your instincts.
It was SO freeing for me to realize that while I will be homeschooling my children, it is okay if I get help with the advanced math for them!
Durenda really encourages homeschooling parents to focus on learning their children really well in order to be the best teacher and advocate for their child’s individual needs rather than doing what school districts, books, methodologies, or family members push for.
Overall, I give The Unhurried Homeschooling: A Simple, Mercifully Short Book on Homeschooling by Durenda Wilson a solid 5 stars and I recommend it to any and all homeschooling parents. This book also makes a great gift!”
