The Power of Regret PDF-“I love that Daniel Pink is taking on one of the best (and toughest) teachers in my life – regret…. The world needs this book.” (Brené Brown, PhD, New York Times best-selling author of Dare to Lead)
From the number one New York Times best-selling author of When and Drive, a new book about the transforming power of our most misunderstood yet potentially most valuable emotion: regret.
Everybody has regrets, Daniel H. Pink explains in The Power of Regret. They’re a universal and healthy part of being human. And understanding how regret works can help us make smarter decisions, perform better at work and school, and bring greater meaning to our lives.
Drawing on research in social psychology, neuroscience, and biology, Pink debunks the myth of the “no regrets” philosophy of life. And using the largest sampling of American attitudes about regret ever conducted as well as his own World Regret Survey – which has collected regrets from more than 15,000 people in 105 countries – he lays out the four core regrets that each of us has. These deep regrets offer compelling insights into how we live and how we can find a better path forward.
As he did in his best sellers Drive, When, and A Whole New Mind, Pink lays out a dynamic new way of thinking about regret and frames his ideas in ways that are clear, accessible, and pragmatic. Packed with true stories of people’s regrets as well as practical takeaways for reimagining regret as a positive force, The Power of Regret shows how we can live richer, more engaged lives.

Here are some favorite quotes:
“Saying that we have no regrets is psychologically tricky. It can be healthy. But more often this prevents us from doing the difficult work that produces genuine contentment.”
“Its [regret’s] purpose is to make us feel worse––because by making us feel worse today, regret helps us do better tomorrow.”
“Rationalization is such a powerful mental weapon it should require a background check.” AMAZING.
“If we think about regret like this – looking backward to move forward, seizing what we can control and putting aside what we cannot, crafting our own redemption stories – it can be liberating.”
“If we know what we truly regret, we know what we truly value. Regret – that maddening, perplexing, and undeniably real emotion—points the way to a life well-lived.”
Importantly, he has me thinking about my own regrets –– I regret not spending more time with my children when they were younger––but now I know that –– I can spend more time with them as they get older.
And, I loved the teaser at the end––“I regret not taking enough entrepreneurial and creative risks, not being as bold as my privilege allows and my heart desires. Now…stay tuned.”
THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOU. YOU’LL REGRET IT IF YOU DON’T.”
Perhaps I expected too much based on his previous books. I don’t think so. As he writes in one of his previous books, “Drive,” people are motivated by Autonomy, Purpose and Mastery. If that is so, then Daniel has lost his motivation toward Mastery because this book is clearly below all of his previous. It is almost like his ability has regressed.
As I already wrote, I REALLY wanted to like this book. And it was very heavily promoted and advertised prior to release. Unfortunately the final result doesn’t live up to the hype! By the way, I would have given it one star but I just couldn’t do that to Daniel Pink, I like his previous work too much.
