IT WAS JUST SUPPOSED TO BE A FAMILY VACATION.

A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT CHANGED EVERYTHING.

YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE CAPABLE OF UNTIL THEY COME FOR YOUR FAMILY.

After moving from a small country town to Seattle, Heather Baxter marries Tom, a widowed doctor with a young son and teenage daughter. A working vacation overseas seems like the perfect way to bring the new family together, but once they’re deep in the Australian outback, the jet-lagged and exhausted kids are so over their new mom.

When they discover remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry, taking a chance on an adventure far from the reach of iPhones and Instagram.

But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong. Then a shocking accident propels the Baxters from an unsettling situation into an absolute nightmare.

When Heather and the kids are separated from Tom, they are forced to escape alone, seconds ahead of their pursuers.

Now it’s up to Heather to save herself and the kids, even though they don’t trust her, the harsh bushland is filled with danger, and the locals want her dead.

Heather has been underestimated her entire life, but she knows that only she can bring her family home again and become the mother the children desperately need, even if it means doing the unthinkable to keep them all alive.

Reviews From Customers

Michelle “Ooooooh boy, do I have things to say about this one.

I think at this point that most people know what the premise to this story is but here’s the gist:

An American family of four: widowed father Tom, his new young wife Heather, and his two kids Olivia (14) and Owen (12) go to Australia where Tom is supposed to attend a conference for orthopedic surgeons. While touring around Australia they stop at a roadside food stand and the kids complain that they haven’t seen any koala bears or kangaroos since they arrived. A couple of scary looking locals tell them about the island they live on with their backwoods family and how there are koalas everywhere. The kids are so excited so Tom agrees to take them all. They are warned to be quick as the matriarch of this lovely family abhors company. Of course, once they arrive an accident happens that traps them there and the family that lives there will do everything in their powers to stop them from leaving. They are going to pay with their lives one way or another.

Sounds super exciting, right?

(Except for the part of them going to an abandoned island with two strangers with wolfish grins – NO ON WOULD DO THIS!!! Of course we wouldn’t have this book if common sense was at play.)

WRONG!!!

This book is not scary or terrifying or any of those other descriptors I’ve heard tossed around. If I had to choose a word to describe this it would be: RIDICULOUS!

This book is so cheesy it gives Velveeta a run for its money.

(pg 18) “Anyone need the toilet? Fab toilets in here. Heather? Looks like you gambled a little on a fart and lost, no?”

Whaaat? That’s incredibly rude to say to someone especially since she’s the organizer of the conference that the husband is attending. But beyond being rude it’s also terrible writing.

(pg 28) “I wanted the new Porsche Cayenne. I called about it last night,” he said, trying to control his temper. “I’m sorry, sir, we don’t have any in the lot. The customer before you got the last one. We have the Turbo or the E-Hybrid. The hybrid is our top Porsche rental, it’s – ” “No, thank you. It’s a long drive. There is no way I would ever trust a hybrid!”

That sounds like some rich white dude first world problems if ever there was one.

(pg 77) “Why had he listened to Heather? She was a Millennial. She didn’t know anything.”

Ahhh, got to love that newlywed phase. What a jerk! Not to mention HE’S the one that got them into this mess to begin with.

(pg 81) “This is utterly disgraceful. You should be ashamed of yourselves. You can’t keep us like this.”

Utterly disgraceful? How polite. I on the other hand would have said “What are you (insert expletive here) psycho’s or something?” but that’s just me.

(pg 83) “And look before Danny gets here, maybe we could come to an arrangement and present it to him as fait accompli,” Tom suggested.

Yes, let’s condescend to Ma of this backwoods group of hillbillies. Smart man be very smart.

(pg 96) “Killer and victim united. I wonder what their ghosts are talking about?”

It’s good to ruminate when you’re being held hostage with a noose around your neck.

(pg 128-129) “What if someone sees us?” Owen asked. “In that case, don’t wait for us, just run and keep running,” Heather said. “Try to hide somewhere until you see a police car.”

Someone needs to remined Heather that they are on an island with no police force. Good luck, kid!

(pg 164) “It’s good to have the ocean at ones back.” “Why is it good Daddy?” “It gives you heft, sweetie. It gives balance to the mind adrift on change and harassed by the irrepressible new.”

Did I mention she’s 14?

(pg 350) “If he so much as farts in my direction, shoot him the way I showed you.”

Two fart references in one book are two fart references too many.

There are so many one-liners sprinkled throughout that I could never, ever take this book seriously. And what’s up with Heather talking about how much she loves that her husband knows his way around knees and ankles. Um, okay. He is an orthopedic surgeon but I never knew knee knowledge was so enticing. I have many more notes I made but I don’t want to waste any more of my time or your time on a book that was downright terrible. 1 star!

Many thanks to Hatchette Book Group for my arc copy.”
