T. “Ally loses her husband in a car crash and is caught in the throes of grief. She decides that she needs a new start, so moves out of the city and into Blackwater Cottage in the small seaside village of Duxbridge. The cottage has a reputation of being haunted and has been empty for years. When Ally moves in, she soon discovers that the rumors are true. Her new home is haunted. Ally is having work done on her home and is soon in a budding romance with Jerry, the contractor. She also becomes friends with Emily who owns the diner in town. They soon become involved in helping Ally unravel the mystery behind the haunting. One of the things that I like is that Ally is able to stay calm enough during the manifestations of two of the ghosts that she is able to understand and respond to their pleas for help. She’s quite brave. There is also an evil spirit that gets his comeuppance thanks to Ally and Emily. There were a few things that I didn’t like about the book. As others have pointed out, the three main characters are always–it seems–drinking and eating. It does get tiresome. At one point, Ally and Emily have visited a woman in another town and are about to drink their fourth beers–and Ally is driving back to Emily’s house?! Although quite likable, the main characters seem rather juvenile, especially Emily with all her innuendos about Ally, Jerry, and sex. Ally and Jerry were always ‘chuckling’ and ‘smiling warmly.’ That was a bit annoying. One final thing that I found distracting was Ally’s visit to Kitty, a woman who was an adult in 1947, but still living alone and taking care of farm animals in the present time. I may have missed something, and the story may have taken place earlier than I had believed. Overall, though, the book entertained me and kept me reading. It surprised me–in a good way–at the end. I’d recommend it.”

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, except for the excessive four letter words used throughout, which I thought were totally unnecessary.”
