There is a world hidden underneath this great city.

The London Silver Vaults—for well over a century, the largest collection of silver for sale in the world. It has more locks than the Bank of England and more cameras than a paparazzi convention.

Not somewhere you can murder someone and vanish without a trace—only that’s what happened.

The disappearing act, the reports of a blinding flash of light, and memory loss amongst the witnesses all make this a case for Detective Constable Peter Grant and the Special Assessment Unit.

Alongside their boss DCI Thomas Nightingale, the SAU find themselves embroiled in a mystery that encompasses London’s tangled history, foreign lands and, most terrifying of all, the North!

And Peter must solve this case soon, because back home his partner Beverley is expecting twins any day now. But what he doesn’t know is that he’s about to encounter something—and somebody—that nobody ever expects…

Effortlessly original, endlessly inventive and hugely entertaining—step into the world of the much-loved, bestselling Rivers of London series.

My first in the series but not my last

April 12, 2022

I have been wanting to try this series for a while, but since I was so far behind, I wasn’t sure. I went ahead and requested this book even without reading previous ones. Yes, I could tell there were things I didn’t understand, but I know this would have been hard to put in the ninth book to bring everyone up do speed. I was still pretty engaged in this book anyway. This author’s writing is very clever, and I loved the little clever sayings and inferences to movies and the like, and I’m sure there are a few inferences I missed. I did also find this a tad wordy, but that’s probably because I’m not much for history, and this did have quite a bit of history. The characters were so fun, the plot interesting, and the overall universe is intriguing. I really liked this book, and I will definitely read more going forward. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

 Wasn’t for me

April 12, 2022

This is the first Rivers of London book I’ve read even though it is the ninth book in the series. Unfortunately it didn’t grab me at all. The writing seemed stilted, I didn’t find any of the characters engaging, and the story unfolded too slowly for me. Not recommended

Thanks to Net Galley and Penguin Random House for an advanced reader copy.

 Wrong title

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 12, 2022

I love a short story. It’s such a lovely brain refresh after reading mammoth books (pachinko I loved you but …) and I must admit although a charming story I do have issues with this little one.
Firstly let’s start with a plus, the writing style is great. It’s fluid , easy to read and you can read completely relaxed .
But my big issue, the title. From the title I expected something dark, tense and gripping but I found myself just reading a charming book which isn’t what I hoped for.
My expectations from the title were set completely wrong and had me set up for some thing completely different.
I wish this had been titled different, even just a title like ‘the mother’ would have been so much more improved.

I would happily recomend but it comes with a warning not to expect a tense exciting rollercoaster but instead a mild cup of tea ☕️
