In 930 CE, a revered group of scholars pens the first sanctioned Bible, planting the seed from which other major religions will grow. But in 1953, half the manuscript goes missing while being transported from Syria. Around the same time, in the foothills of the Dead Sea, an ancient scroll is discovered—and promptly stolen.

Six decades later, both parchments stand at the heart of a geopolitical battle between foreign governments and radical extremists, threatening the lives of millions. With the American homeland under siege, the president turns to a team of uniquely trained covert operatives including FBI profiler Karen Vail, Special Forces veteran Hector DeSantos, and FBI terrorism expert Aaron Uziel. Their mission: Find the stolen documents and capture—or kill—those responsible for unleashing a coordinated and unprecedented terrorist attack on US soil.

Set in DC, New York, Paris, England, and Israel, The Lost Codex has been hailed by Douglas Preston as “a masterwork of international suspense” and “an outstanding novel.”

Exciting and fast paced, with great historical background, but very dark at times.

A very timely, and dark, book. Hard not to look at the current disaster in Syria when reading about the historical significance of Aleppo in Biblical history. And the lessons learned about the increasing tie-ins between drug trafficking and terrorism are eye opening. However, it is very dark. Numerous terrorist attacks in the book, and a great deal of suspicion between agents when an Islamic agent is assigned to the team. Frankly, it’s hard to feel there is any chance of Mideast peace EVER being achieved after reading this book.

However, I love dramas/mysteries based on historical events. It’s a great way to learn historical tidbits. And the Karen Vail series has some fascinating characters and relationships that span countries and international intelligence agencies. The book moves from DC to NY to London to Paris to Israel. The best part of the book is the way the team works around bureaucratic obstacles to get things done. Amazing what folks can achieve if they are acting in good faith and don’t care who gets the credit. And there is a great deal of good natured banter between the team. I particularly like the comment when Karen is told she is about to parachute into another country, only the second time she’s ever used a parachute. She is assured that her ripcord will be put into another agent’s hand, to prevent her from freezing up. When she realizes that puts her life in his hands, he responded that now would be a good time to apologize for all the bad things she’s ever said about him over the years. 🙂 So, overall, I’m glad I bought and read this book.

But again, be forewarned, there is a very dark undertone to this book. As uplifting as the work of the intelligence agents are in overcoming both terrorists AND their own bureaucracies, the underlying assumptions about the Mideast do not lend themselves to optimism about peace ever coming to that region.

 Great fast paced read~

I will be the first to admit, I am a huge fan of Alan Jacobson’s work and of his Karen Vail series. I was anxiously awaiting this newest novel, involving his OPSIG team with familiar characters Vail, Uzi and DeSantos. I highly recommend any of Mr. Jacobson’s work and you will not be disappointed with The Last Codex. It is filled with suspense and intrigue– the reader becomes fully engaged in the storyline, as well as fully invested in the characters.
It seems that with every novel Mr. Jacobson writes, the reader is immersed in the details and facts of the story. His attention to detail is amazing. I always find myself wanting to learn even more about whatever topic has been tackled. In The Last Codex, the topic is politics, religion and terrorism which really hits home with all that is going on in this world today.
I must say, one the the things that I enjoy most about Mr. Jacobson’s novels is the realistic, fast-paced dialogue of his characters. I would love to sit down over a cup of coffee with his Agents Vail, Uziel and DeSantos and discuss their lives!
Great job Alan Jacobson…..great read!!!
