Julie
Yalom speaks about people and therapy in a way that is so nuanced and beautiful
January 8, 2018

I’ve read this book 3-4 times at this point. With each reading, I find a piece of advice to pull from that feels extremely poignant to what is currently going on in my life.

Irv Yalom is one of my therapy heros. While I’ve never met him, I find myself pulling from his advice in many different circumstances. Unlike many psychiatrists, Yalom does not pathologize. He seems to treat people like people and encourage future therapists to do so as well. As a therapist myself, when I am feeling lost, I often think “what would Yalom say about this?”

I think we are in a time where despite immense progress, going to therapy is still stigmatized (even in the field). I appreciate how Yalom speaks openly about the importance of his own therapy on his progression to becoming a better therapist. I think that this book is important for anyone to read but especially for those who want to understand why therapy is so important and how healing it can be.

Wonderful book for new therapists + a question
January 4, 2022

I’m a graduate student in a therapy Masters program, and this book is so, so good. The writer is an older man and the tone is definitely “20th century Stanford literary chic,” but the advice and feeling the writer conveys are super valuable. My one question is, given the writer is a straight, white, cis gendered, affluent male, I wonder how much of this applies (without adjustment) to marginalized people? That perspective in no way detracts from the writer or his book, but rather is a thinking point posed to readers, who are often future therapists who may work with underrepresented populations. I Iove this book and would appreciate seeing a similar one written by people representing different groups and communities.

Simply one of the best books on therapy you can own
March 12, 2018

Simply one of the best books on therapy you can own, from a therapist’s perspective or a client’s. It provides such wonderful insight for a neophyte on many difficult subjects and general questions alike. I read it at least once a year as a psychotherapist to remind myself of what we are all capable of in this field and how the relationship and empathy should always be at the forefront of my mind.

Dont love Yalom, love the Gift
February 26, 2015

So, he gives advice. At his age he deserves to give something more than he has to the profession that is so much a part of one’s identity. So my advice? Get it and read it, if you are a therapist or plan to be one; take it one chapter at a time if you are a client or patient – use it on your journey; humble yourself to try something new, again, better, different, old school, if you are a therapist and don’t have time for anything but earning your CEU’s. Take your time! Be in the here and now when you read it! Breathe deep breaths. Notice your responses to the gifts he has given and to what he has received and ask if you are giving and receiving, both, as well. Soak in Yalom’s wisdom; he has written his share, and logs 30+ years of experience. Yalom’s ideas are often not his own but he has a nice way of sticking in your mind; they have served me well in my own profession and journey; but ignore – even scoff – at his arrogance. All of his writing has that edge and there’s so much more to focus on here.

Not what I was expecting
April 5, 2022

I currently about to start my graduate degree in clinical psychology and thought this book would provide more insight and guidance to new therapists. The advice in the book is subpar, nothing earth-shattering like previous reviews mentioned. The author promotes his other books in almost every single chapter. I get you need to make a living but 20 chapters in it gets a but redundant. It also made me slightly uncomfortable with the numerous time the author mentions having attractions to clients or clients having attractions to him. Instead of this book being for “a new generation of therapists”, I think its based suited for those who have several years of counseling experience and those who specialize in group therapy, as that’s what most of his advice is geared towards.
