ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Florence Scovel Shinn was a woman ahead of her time. To many, she is considered to be among the likes of James Allen, Wallace D. Wattles and Napoleon Hill. She had the ability to explain her success principles and how they work in an entertaining and easy-to-read style. She can be considered one of last century’s most popular success teachers.

Florence Scovel Shinn was born on September 24, 1871, in Camden, New Jersey to Alden Cortland Scovel and Emily Hopkinson. She had an older sister and a younger brother. She was educated at Friends Central School in Philadelphia. She later studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1889 to 1897. While there, she met Everett Shinn, a painter of impressionistic canvases and realistic murals. They married shortly after Florence graduated from the art academy. The Shinns moved to New York where both pursued their separate careers, Everett in the theatre while Florence did illustrations for children’s literature in magazines and books.

In 1925, Florence decided to publish her first book ‘The Game of Life and How to Play It’. After unsuccessfully finding a publisher for her work, she published it herself. Her second book, ‘Your Word is Your Wand’ followed in 1928 and her final book ‘The Secret Door to Success’ was published in 1940 shortly before her death on October 17, 1940. A fourth book, ‘The Power of the Spoken Word’ is a compendium of her notes, gathered by one of her students and published posthumously in 1945.

To create the spiritually based websites she infuses the energy and essence of the client and their work into the site so the world clicking in will feel the quintessence of the work of the client.

On October 31, 2005 Kate’s dad, Big Jim died during open heart surgery and life changed forever. Once in spirit form Big Jim became a frequent visitor to Kate’s home bringing with him his pet skunk, Alvin who is also in spirit. He continued to be her dad offering advice when asked and often when he wasn’t. In 2007 Big Jim asked Kate to write Waiting in the Other Room and share his insight and perspective of his death and life on Mother Earth from the angelic realms. Their collaboration produced the book Waiting in the Other Room, the Waiting in the Other Room journal, the Sacred Space ~ Build It and They Will Come guided meditation CD and Communicating Through Dementia guided meditation CD.

P. Butler “This is one of the most important books I’ve ever read concerning how to prosper in life in every way. The principles of right thinking and feeling right about something can’t be overemphasised enough, and Florence Scovel-Shinn gives plenty of anecdotes from her experiences with clients to illustrate her points.

This lady is bursting with wisdom, some of which is not reiterated or emphasised enough by other authors on topics such as the Law Of Attraction. One of the things she emphasises is following one’s intuition in order to follow divine clues which lead to your desired result, no matter how strange they seem to the rational mind, and the importance of being generous and giving freely or your time and money, as well as being open to receive. In other words, never let fear dictate your thoughts or actions as it will always lead to the wrong outcome, and to aim to embody your spirituality in your everyday life with right thinking or ‘dharma’ to keep yourself on the right track, thereby avoiding ‘sin’ or ‘wrong thinking’.

It’s written in a religous style using the Judao-Chirstian God as a philosophical basis, with references to Biblical parables. But these certainly work as psychological and symbolic models of the principles in process, and illustrate the consequences of either following the correct path of love and right thinking or the wrong path of fear and wrong thinking, leading to ‘evil’ or negative outcomes. But if this doesn’t sit well with you it’s easy to mentally substitute these words for more contemporary secular versions of God or the Divine such as ‘The Universe’. I found the style inoffensive and easy to understand, and didn’t hinder the delivery of the message at all.

There are many books of this nature still in print or on kindle, and they all say similar things about how to get what you want out of life, but this is the first of these older books I’ve come across (1925) that takes heed of the little details that can trip us up if we’re not careful and why and how mistakes can be made that can prevent us from manifesting what we want. The answers are simple, really, but easy to overlook as we ‘fall from grace’ and forget who is really in control of everything – ourselves and our connection to God or the universe, not the world we see with all of it’s dramas, gossip and pettiness we can lose ourselves in.

I find it helpful to take written notes of important points that I feel I need to work on in my own life, and the format makes it easy to do so, as it’s well written and concise rather than repetitive as so many of these books on the subject of manifesting are.

I recommend that people read this book, and try to incorporate some of the principles in their lives. The world would be a better place if wisdom such as this was common sense!”

Liss “The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn was originally published in 1975, yet remains timeless. It is full of philosophical reminders that speak to the part of us that knows we have the power to write our own lives here on earth. And has been added to my “must read often” and “life-changing” bookshelf.

With such simplicity, Florence uses examples, and an energetic wisdom, to guide readers towards transforming our realities. From hardship, victim or pessimistic attitudes to abundant, triumphant and optimistic attitudes.

I’ve seen the negative affects of living with a doubtful mind, and the great blessings that come with shifting to a more intuitively confident, and affirmative, state of being. Florence confirms that your strongest beliefs will be fulfilled. Life force responds to your intention, actions and beliefs, not words alone. We have to do more than just speak it. We must believe in ourselves and prepare for the things we want out of life.

Alongside explanations of how important mindset is, Florence gives helpful examples of how to switch your verbiage (and now I have sticky notes around my room with my own personalised affirmations inspired by her style of expression). I don’t chant them repeatedly though, because she reminded me that if you truly believe in a thing, then you only ever need to affirm it once.”

Junely “Prosperity Gospel” teachings that are wholly un-biblical. People like this thrive on robbing others of their money, claiming it is God’s will to do so, which is totally wrong.

God is not a genie in a bottle that if you rub the right way He will give you stuff…That is NOT the God of the Bible.

If you’re seeking real freedom, real peace, real redemption, and a real relationship with the Creator, reading these sorts of books is NOT what you want to do. And this is certainly NOT what real believers in Christ believe. These types of books and the people who preach it are false prophets, teaching a false gospel.

The urgency of this topic is underlined in Galatians 1:6-9:

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—7 not that there is another one [there is no other gospel], but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ [there is a distortion that becomes another gospel] 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. [The fixedness of the gospel could not be expressed more strongly] 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed [Not just believing a different gospel but advocating for it brings a final curse—1 Corinthians 16:22 – If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come!]

Pray for discernment, fellow believers. God is not concerned about how fat your paycheck is or how many cars you own, He’s cares about YOU, your soul, your salvation, and your relationship with Him. He helps us in our struggles, and never forsakes us, but He does NOT guarantee or even promise we’ll be rich or some superficial thing like that. He promises that His peace, and the joy and satisfaction in Him, despite our circumstances, that confounds the world, will be ours through Christ Jesus. Don’t be fooled.

God bless.”
