Books have always given me an adventure, an opportunity to step into another life, another perspective. I always enjoy historical fiction when it includes details of a real person’s experience. Kate Quinn’s novel, The Diamond Eye, delves into the incredible life of Mila Pavlichenko, a librarian who became an actual Russian army sniper fighting the Nazis during WWII.
This gripping book explores historical events that include descriptions of Mila fighting with the Russian army in key battles and becoming a goodwill ambassador to the United States. During her tour of the US she meetsEleanor Roosevelt, and begins a long friendship with her Quinn invents the storyline of a menacing assassin looking for a way to murder FDR and have Mila take the blame.The book alternates among Mila’s experiences as a sniper, her marriage as a young mother, and her studies as a PhD student.
Mila,known as “Lady Death” for her record of killing over 300 Nazis during the war, leaves the battlefields of the eastern front for a goodwill tour in America. Quinn does meticulous research and the characters come to life.. “What do you believe in, Mila?”

I enjoyed the war storyline for Quinn’s detailed and lush descriptions of a female soldier fighting in a male-dominated war. Kate Quinn has found a female main character as different from American women as possible. However, she develops Lyudmila Pavlichenko (Mila) so deeply that the reader thoroughly understands her motivations, cheers her on, and sympathizes with her. Quinn’s genius for finding unknown, untold stories from history is peerless. This one is perfectly timed with the current Russian invasion of Ukraine as American readers will come to understand the Russian value of the collective over the individual. (This does not excuse the invasion.) The back matter that Quinn includes is stellar. Every book club will be watching the YouTube videos. This one is a brilliant diamond of the highest quality, polished and multifaceted. Kudos Kate Quinn. You’ve done it again.

This book was very well written but because of current world devastating affairs I could not read about Russian army snipers but I’m sure she was a very brave woman didn’t get to far in the book

The Diamond Eye is an historical fiction story based on Lyudmila Pavlichenko, a Russian sniper during WW2. Lyudmila, Mila, was a young mother (16) who wanted to make life better for her son. When she and her husband became estranged only two years after her marriage, she worked hard to get into University. She participated in a variety of activities, and after being goaded by her husband, took marksmen courses, receiving a master marksmen certificate. Working at a library in Odessa as well as on her dissertation, her goal was to become a teacher of history at the university. But then, Hitler’s nazis invaded Russia. She immediately signs up to the infantry. Women were not taken seriously as soldiers and she has to go through a lot to be taken seriously. Mila is a crack shot and becomes the deadliest sniper with over 300 official kills and many more unofficial ones, becoming known as Lady Death. She travels to the US as part of a goodwill tour to convince Roosevelt to assist Russia by splitting the German troops by joining the Western Offensive. A war hero, a female and someone I knew nothing about.

Learning about a Russian sniper and that Russia and the US were partners at one time is tough with what is happening in the world right now. Having said that, Mila is an admirable character, and the Russians fought hard and lost many thousands in their fight against Hitler and fascism. As usual Kate Quinn did an amazing job with her research and I definitely recommend you read her notes at the end of the book. Kate Quinn’s writing is very descriptive, including the war scenes which were so vivid they had me feeling such sadness and grief. The characters in the book; Mila, Alexei, and Kostia, were well developed and I was able to picture them easily. The characters were not all likeable, especially the narcissistic Alexei. I loved the way Eleanor Roosevelt was written as well as her relationship with Franklin. Mila’s time in the US was fascinating and I was not surprised to learn about her treatment by the press. The added fictionalized storyline to the visit was gripping and added to my enjoyment of the story. Mila was human, she fell in love, had her heart broken, she kept going because she didn’t want the Germans to win and for her son. This is not a happy story, there was very little humour, what was there was during interviews with misogynistic press and Mila giving as good as she got. I liked the ending and how all the loose ends were tied up. I definitely recommend The Diamond Eye to those who enjoy good historical fiction. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Saskia Maarleveld and she does an amazing job. If you enjoy audiobooks, I definitely recommend you listen to this one.
