The unforgettable, inspiring story of a teenage girl growing up in a rural Nigerian village who longs to get an education so that she can find her “louding voice” and speak up for herself, The Girl with the Louding Voice is a simultaneously heartbreaking and triumphant tale about the power of fighting for your dreams.  Despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles in her path, Adunni never loses sight of her goal of escaping the life of poverty she was born into so that she can build the future she chooses for herself – and help other girls like her do the same.  Her spirited determination to find joy and hope in even the most difficult circumstances imaginable will “break your heart and then put it back together again” (Jenna Bush Hager on The Today Show) even as Adunni shows us how one courageous young girl can inspire us all to reach for our dreams…and maybe even change the world.

Heartbreaking. Resilient. Triumphant.

Abi Dare joins the literary scene with “The Girl With the Louding Voice”; a mesmerizing look at the plight of young women in Nigeria today, being sold into “slavery”.

Adunni, the heroine of this story, is 14 years old and has been sold as a 3rd wife to a much older man who desperately wants a son. She’s ill prepared for what lies ahead…Adunni puts up a fight at every opportunity and offers a helping hand to others along the way. Her youth and naïveté are both a curse and a blessing and she quickly learns that education is her way to freedom.

For all the darkness and violence that exists in this story, it’s the hope that shines thru. Author Dare is able to write without gratuitous descriptive violence, sexual content or foul language. There are brief violent scenes, they do not linger or assault while reading, thankfully.

A “Louding Voice” is what this book has. Presenting the contemporary issues plaguing Nigeria: female slavery, inequality, lack of education, etc., Abi Dare’s debut novel will entertain, educate and motivate📚

Everyone needs to read this book!

“I am not a wasted waste. I am Adunni. A person important enough because my tomorrow will be better than today”

ALL the stars for this book!! Putting my feelings into words after such a powerful story feels impossible. This story tore at every seam of my heart. It was both beautiful and devastating. I was horrified then filled with hope.

Adunni is one of the best characters i’ve ever read. She is the epitome of strength and bravery. Every obstacle, she overcame. Every time she should have died inside due to circumstances, she fought and continued to flourish. The descriptions of people and places were so thorough it really put me in this book. I could feel every moment. This story portrayed so well how even when everything seems hopeless, just one person believing in you can change everything. I want to be that friend, that encourager and supporter of others.

Adunnis character so brilliantly displayed how to never give up. Never allow anyone to silence you or say you’re not enough. Everyone has value. Every. Single. Person is important.

This book will be a forever favorite! I will recommend it to everyone! My children will read this book. I will carry this story in my heart forever. I will never forget it and I am sure I will reread it again and again.

VINE VOICE
Looking For Her Life

Louding
‘Speaking in a deliberately carrying voice in a public place’
UrbanDictionary

Adunni, a 14 year old girl, living in Nigeria, is the narrator of this story. Her one important goal in life is to become educated. She does not understand why she cannot speak up for herself, but her culture does not allow it for girls/women. She wants to learn to speak English, and she does in her own way. As she narrates her story, the verbs and pronouns are missing, but it is easy to pick up the parlance of the meaning of her words, and soon it flows more easily.

Adunni lives with her father and siblings, and since her mother has died she is the caretaker. Hoping to be able to continue to become educated, her hopes are dashed when her father sells her to an elderly cabdriver, who has two wives. Life is difficult, but it becomes even more so after a shocking event, and she is sold to a household in Lagos as a housemaid. As a young woman who has dreams, Adunni perseveres, and we know people like this, we can identify. The quest for education and your own life is the ultimate.

The author has written a heartfelt novel with Adunni as the young woman we come to cheer. The obstacles she faces to overcome are severe and very high. The life of a young woman in Nigeria is more than difficult in the poorest sections. Note: Nigeria is now a country on the United States banned visitation list. All of the young women who dreamed of a better life in the US will have to wait. This is another obstacle Adunni would have to face if given the chance. A young woman who pushes forward to improve her life, with her own language learns to communicate herself, and she is the kind of hero we need.

”I don’t just want to be having any kind voice . . . I want a louding voice.”
February 11, 2020

The Girl with the Louding Voice is beautifully written and culturally rich. It leaves a powerful impact. Abi Dare’s talent and Adunni’s spirit blew me away. The story is heartbreaking but also heartwarming; lyrical and sweet. I fell in love with Adunni. I highlighted and saved many of her broken English thoughts…so simple and profound. Her personality was captivating and she refused to be deterred by the cruel and ugly reality around her. I’m still thinking about this story two days after I closed the book. I highly recommend it to all my reading friends.

“That day, I tell myself that even if I am not getting anything in this life, I will go to school. I will finish my primary and secondary and university schooling and become teacher because I don’t just want to be having any kind voice . . . I want a louding voice.”

“Thank you,” I say to The Book of Nigerian Facts, touching the cover with the shining map and the green-white-green color of the Nigerian flag, the lettering of many, many facts inside the pages.
I stay there until I know it, until I feel a warm release inside of me that it is time to go. When I walk away from the library, I don’t close the door. I leave it open for the spirit in all the books to be following me.”

This is a perfect book
February 23, 2020

I rarely take the time to write a review, however this is a perfect book. I think it is the only one she has written so far. I hope she writes another soon. I have found every aspect of what writing is all about done extremely well with this book. What matters a lot to me is that I can sit back and enjoy it with out being attacked with horrible language and a lot of bad morals. I recommend this book highly.
