Everything that I love in a story.

Yes. Just Yes. Read this book.
I enjoyed every moment of this book.
Wren and Crew are perfection and the chemistry they have is sizzling!

Wren is innocence, sweetness and naivety all wrapped up in one package.
She is smart and yearning for people who really care about her.
You watch her grip her independence by the horns and fight for her autonomy.

Crew is a hero that is left into a ball of mush for his girl.
He really had me wrapped around his finger by the end of the book.

And the drama…. I was sweating it out with nerves at Chapter 4 and the rollercoaster never ended.
These are the books that I live for. First kisses, First Loves and stories that I can’t put down and never want to end.

Adorable tale of first love
March 10, 2022

No one quite writes the drama and exhilaration of new adult, young love with such authenticity and intensity as Monica Murphy! A Million Kisses in your lifetime is as sweet as candy- a charming tale of young love that is so swoony you’re heart will float.

To really enjoy this story, you’ll first have to check your Lancaster expectations at the door. Crew, and his story, is nothing like Whit- though at the outset, we have similar narrative architecture. An elite boy, besotted with a girl, who he equal parts desires and resents, all because she captures him. And while Crew starts with some mild bully vibes, once this love story picks up, this is NOTHING like the vitriolic toxicity that we love about Whit Lancaster and his broody ways. Crew is a whole other animal- but one equally transfixing, and certainly just as appealing. But this book is a WHOLE other vibe- more sweet, very charming, and a WHOLE lot swoony- Crew falls hard and fast, and soon you’ll find very little in common with him and his cousin’s story, other than their last name.

One thing that I really admire about Monica Murphy’s writing is how relatable she makes her characters, even when their context or lived experience is most certainly fiction. The elite world, the adult-feelings and sensuality, the extraordinary drama and experiences her characters face on the surface may be nothing like our teens- but Monica always imbues the essence of adolescent, of maturing, so genuinely and endearingly into the lived experiences of her characters that even within their uncommon lives we find common threads of our own maturation. Wren’s innocence, her lingering need to please her parents, her desire to be perceived as good, as an achiever- I couldn’t relate to that more. But perhaps what makes her the most lovable, and the most relatable, is her desperation to figure out just who she is, absent from those around her. Crew challenges her to confront the fallacy of her identity, to question just how real is the way she perceives herself- her friends, her needs, her family, her ambitions. It’s the most teenage of experiences and lessons- figuring out what is temporal in our world and what is truth. And I love how she recognizes her own agency- how Crew gives her the safety and the courage to explore herself, to find her own voice. Their budding romance is the catalyst to her identity development, and it makes it all the sweeter.

And Crew- and I mean YUMMY. He starts off as an arrogant, broody subversive trouble maker, but he really is a big giant gummy bear. And I love Monica Murphy gummy bear badboys. Crew goes HARD for his lady, and I loved how sweetly he pursues her. He challenges her, in all the ways she needs, but he also provides the emotional support she needs to trust him, to lean into her journey. He brings out ALL the swoon, and their romance gets swoonier and swoonier as the story goes on- with Crew turning into a total dreamboat- but with a dirty talking mouth I can’t get enough of. He loves really hard, and that makes him so endearing. I don’t feel we “know” him quite in the same way we know Wren, but we still get to see him evolve as he decides how to be a man, to be worthy of the girl he’s been chasing. He finds a lot of himself in Wren, and I loved how we get to see them be real FRIENDS as part of their romance- though their steamy side is so delicious too. His gentleness and patience with Wren makes this whole story- he’s the first boyfriend we all wanted.

Narratively, this story certainly felt different. The romance itself is pretty low angst and absent of any major conflict once they get over their initial hiccups- which I appreciated because we actually just get to fall into their romance and spend a lot of the story with them together, which is how I love my new adult romance. There are a lot of red herring obstacles that you THINK might pan out to a major climax but don’t end up being one, and the ending conflict itself was a bit unusual, quickly resolved, and not what I was expecting, but did nicely showcase the growth of our characters and their connection. And the epilogue was adorable.

I can not WAIT for more Lancasters, especially as we get to meet Charlotte and PERRY! I love seeing all the tones and tenors Monica can bring to a story- so the sweet, low angst charm of this one I’m guessing will contrast nicely with the dark angst coming our way with her Constantine story- and I know I’ll love it too!

When nothing is what it appears
March 7, 2022

Wren Beaumont has wanted to fly under the radar from the first day she stepped onto Lancaster Prep her freshman year. That never happened. From her trademark Mary Jane shoes to her hair pulled back in a bow everyone took notice. Including Crew Lancaster. Crew and Wren are now seniors, and both are just trying to get through the year. These two never were in the same circles as Wren was the goody two shoes and Crew pushed the envelope. That is until they are paired up in Psychology class for a project. They have to spend time together to find out about the other and then present what they find. These two expected to have nothing in common, end up having so much. They are both hiding themselves from all those around them. Wren may be pure, and Crew may not be but when they share their first kiss, Crew wants them all. They both have family obstacles to get around, can they make a go at this no matter how difficult it may be?

I wish I had words to fully explain how much I enjoyed this book. There is something to be said of the girl that hasn’t even had her first kiss and the bad boy who would do anything to get that kiss and so much more. I love when we get to watch the guy figure out that there is something special when you have to work extra hard to get the girl. He tries to woo her, but he knows that isn’t what she wants or needs. She just needs someone to be her friend especially when life starts to fall apart around her. Crew just wants to protect her with everything he can. Wren has always been the apple of her dad’s eyes but she realizes that sometimes she just needs to be herself. It was great to watch her come out of her shell and find her own two feet.
