If you are an intellectual, don’t waste your time on this book

January 27, 2019

Bought this book for my class, and it was painful to read. Reading the book is like reading Instagram inspirational posts. Don’t really have to use your brain when you read it because basically the author is just going circle and repeating himself while making up new words to make it seem fancy. His argument is very poorly supported. The 7 habits mentioned are what HE THINKS effective people have. He even used bible character to support his points of view, so….Good for people who are lost and need directions. But if you are intelligent, you probably already knew most of the things the author says.

Fantastic book by Stephen R. Covey
If you’re into self-improvement I couldn’t recommend this highly enough.
Four generations of time management:
1st generation – notes and checklists
2nd generation – calendars and appointment books
3rd generation – important idea of prioritisation, of clarifying values, and of comparing the relative worth of activities based on their relationship to those value
4th generation – recognises that “time management” is really a misnomer-the challenge is not to manage time, but to manage ourselves
5th generation – tbc

This is one of the two best books anyone can read on negotiation

May 19, 2016

My bona fides: I have professionally negotiated for over thirty years. Do it daily. I’ve taken approximately 20 hours of graduate study in negotiation and conflict resolution. I occasionally lecture on the subject.

My rating: This is one of the two best books anyone can read on negotiation. The other is Cialdini’s famous, “Influence: The Art and Science of Persuasion.” While there are many good books on the subject, I can’t think of any others that are as complete and useful as these.

Advice: Remember that negotiation is a practice. You will be best aided by these books by taking a chapter at a time and practice the ideas and techniques. Practice them on your family, on your colleagues and on your friends. (Forget pets. Dogs are too obliging and cats too indifferent.)

Should be a 5 minute video

Imagine this: Let’s say you pay a private music teacher $50 for a one hour music lesson. The teacher then spends 15 minutes providing you with instruction, and the other 45 minutes relaying stories and anecdotes of how she came to learn these lessons herself during her long career as a world-class performer.
You would fire the teacher.
This is my least favorite genre of book – the bait and switch non fiction. Expert promises to share expertise with you, then writes a book that is 90% autobiography and 10% useful, actionable information.
