Way too much drama

This book read like a really bad, really corny daytime soap opera. Most of the character interactions were so cheesy and predictable, I’m surprised my eyes didn’t fall right out of my head from all the rolling they did. The concept was somewhat novel, but the plot has been done a million times before. And the writing was super awkward, it felt really amateur and forced. The sex scenes felt like something you’d read in 15 year old Taylor Swift’s diary (whole lot of super dramatic eye contact, bad one liners, and “soul shattering” going on). PSA to authors, unless you’re writing a period piece, please stop writing dialogue like we’re on the set of Pride and Prejudice; if you, as a person living in 2021, don’t talk to people like that (and I sincerely hope you don’t) then your characters shouldn’t either. There’s no need to puff up the writing with old timey phrases like, “I ordered you not to enter my quarters”.

Watch out for that cliffhanger….

It took me a minute to get into, but the premise of the series was extremely intriguing and I kept pushing through. Till finally, I really started to like the feisty main character and all her sass. It was a breath of fresh air and something the paranormal romance genre could use more of.

I’m always really skeptical of book series like this, they often rush the romance and it feels really artificial. But the chemistry and pace with these characters is well done. The twist in the concept werewolf mates was refreshing as well. I really like that even though this is very much heteronormative romance, it still includes queer relationships and the concept of them.

The only actual criticism I have is that, I wish there was more showing and less telling. Granted, I understand that’s harder to do with a first person point of view story. However, there were times where I think the story would have benefited more from showing things rather than just straight up explaining them right off the bat.

This all being said I absolutely really enjoyed this book! I’ll be waiting for the next one, because after that cliffhanger…. Oh man… I can’t wait to find something out what is going to happen next!
