Features of The Wrong Mother A Zailer and Waterhouse Mystery PDF

A chilling, compulsively readable novel of psychological suspense from the author of Little Face and The Carrier The Wrong Mother A Zailer and Waterhouse Mystery PDF

Sally Thorning is watching the news with her husband when she hears a name she never thought she’d hear again: Mark Bretherick.

It’s a name she shouldn’t recognize. Last year, a work trip Sally had planned was canceled at the last minute. Desperate for a break from juggling her job and a young family, Sally didn’t tell her husband that the trip had fallen through. Instead, she treated herself to a secret vacation in a remote hotel. While she was there, Sally met a man—Mark Bretherick. All the details are the same: where he lives, his job, his wife Geraldine and daughter Lucy. Except that the photograph on the news is of a man Sally has never seen before. And Geraldine and Lucy Bretherick are both dead…

With the international bestseller Little Face, Sophie Hannah established herself as a striking new voice in psychological suspense. The Wrong Mother, a riveting exploration of a mother’s unspeakable betrayal, confirms her reputation as a master of the form.

A Great Premise – that goes unfulfilled. Disappointing.

June 12, 2018

At the beginning, this book presented an interesting and perplexing premise: Sally Thorning, a married woman (wife and mother), had a short sexual fling with Mark Bretherick over a year ago. Now, in the present time, Sally sees a news item on television, stating that the wife of Mark Bretherick has killed their daughter and committed suicide. Sally recognizes the names of the family members, which jibe with the conversations she had with Mark during their week-long affair – but surprise! The Mark Bretherick is NOT the same fellow with whom she was involved. Sally is shocked, as she looks at the tv screen as the story is shown and wonders what is going on. Sally is confounded! Her husband wonders about her interest in the news item, but he doesn’t know anything about her short affair.

She concludes that the grieving husband shown on tv must be an imposter, and she writes a short note to the police, telling them to verify the identity of the husband, whom she believes is NOT Mark Bretherick.

The situation continues to upset Sally, who has come to believe that someone is following her and that she is in danger. She was pushed in front of a bus and she narrowly escapes death, and Sally is certain that it was not an accident. She gets further involved in the mystery, and even goes to visit the mourning husband. During the visit, she manages to steal some photos from his home that further make the situation even more puzzling.

She sends another note to the police, giving more details about her elicit week with Mark Bretherick a year ago – thus risking her marriage. The police working the crime become aware of Sally’s note that says Mark is not really whom he says he is. They are also reviewing a diary, supposedly written by Geraldine (Mark’s wife), that show entries of marital discord and a particular dislike for her daughter Lucy. Everyone who knows Geraldine say that the diary is a fake, and that she could never have made those entries.

When the story shifts to focus on the police – Zailer and Waterhouse who are romantically involved in a problematic relationship (apparently left over from the first book of the series), and other police working the case such as the Snowman (nickname for their cold supervisor), and other police – with too much backstory the plot seems to dilute its impact and the book loses its energy. More police characters, other characters, other backstories, seem to strangle the second half of the book. And the resolution was very weak as well.

So after reading this, I would rate the first half as wonderfully intriguing and the second half – well, a bit of a let-down.

But for a while, I had a good read – and thus at least three stars for the intriguing start-up. All in all, a bit disappointing and I would not recommend it, except for fans of Sophie Hannah.
