Features of A Trouble of Fools The Carlotta Carlyle Mysteries PDF

This award-winning debut mystery introduces a Boston PI who’s “one of the most sparkling, most irresistible heroines ever to grace the pages of a whodunit” (Chicago Sun-Times).A Trouble of Fools The Carlotta Carlyle Mysteries PDF

Six-foot-tall, redheaded ex-cop and Boston-based private eye Carlotta Carlyle is “the genuine article: a straightforward, funny, thoroughly American mystery heroine” (New York Post).

Let go from the Beantown police force for insubordination, Carlotta Carlyle is ready for business. Her first client is the genteel and elderly Margaret Devens, whose brother, Eugene, one of the last in a handful of Boston’s aging Irish cabbies, has suddenly vanished.

The case should be a cinch. Carlotta knows the territory. She even knew Eugene. But when Margaret is attacked, Carlotta fears the disappearance is just one hitch in a bigger scheme. Trolling the local pubs for clues isn’t going to hack it. Especially when she finds herself at odds with the FBI and a Mafia-connected former lover. As a moonlighting cabbie, Carlotta knows the streets well. But even she has no idea just how dangerous a route she’s taken . . .

Winner of the American Mystery Award and nominated for both the Edgar and Shamus Awards, this first book in the series is “beautifully plotted, exciting, moving, and leavened with wit” (Robert B. Parker).

The Authors

A Trouble of Fools The Carlotta Carlyle Mysteries PDF

I was born in Detroit; I always say it’s where I learned about crime, but I mean no disrespect to a great city. It’s also where I learned to love Motown music and do the Stroll. Came to Boston for college, and like so many, stayed, awed by the Atlantic Ocean and accessible public transportation. I still love walking Boston’s cobbled streets, riding the T, breathing the history.

I started writing while teaching high school theater. Required to enter a one-act play festival sponsored by the Boston Globe, I posted the cast list before I selected the play. (I had great students that year, and 12 of them certainly deserved to be in the festival cast.) When I couldn’t find a one-act with 12 roles, I had to write one myself. The festival was a competition, and darned if we didn’t keep winning, right up until the state finals, where a man introduced himself to me and inquired whether he might publish that play. I said yes, wrote more plays, then segued into crime fiction.

My first Carlotta Carlyle short story, “Lucky Penny,” won an Anthony Award. The first Carlyle novel, A TROUBLE OF FOOLS, was nominated for an Edgar and a Shamus, and won the American Mystery Award. Eleven books later, the most recent Carlyle, LIE DOWN WITH THE DEVIL, was named one of the Best Mysteries of 2008 by Publisher’s Weekly.

In April my first stand alone novel, THE PERFECT GHOST, comes out. It was exciting to work with brand new characters in a wonderfully scenic Cape Cod locale. Please check my website at lindabarnes.com for upcoming appearances and follow me on Facebook.

Carlotta Carlyle, former Boston cop, works out of her home as a private investigator, taking just about any case that comes her way. When an elderly spinster, Miss Margaret Devens, stops by her home asking Carlotta to find her missing brother Eugene, Carlotta is hesitant to take the case, assuming that the man had his own reasons to leave his sister’s house. Carlotta even worked with Eugene, back when she drove a cab for Green and White. But she’s broke and bored and decides it should be an easy case, so she takes the job. Things get a little tougher when two men break into Miss Devens home and send her to the hospital. Suddenly, the case doesn’t look so simple after all.

I can’t wait to read more of the books in this series. I really liked the character of Carlotta. She’s very independent and handles things her own way (which is why she found herself out of the Boston police force). This was a very entertaining book that read quickly, with solid characters, and even though it is an older title, it doesn’t seem dated at all.

Bk 1 of the Carlotta Carlyle series – it’s okay

I’m a long-time fan of mysteries, and have every one of JD Robb’s “In Death” Eve Dallas series. I’ve been trying other female cop/PI series, but haven’t found anything so far I like better, or even as much, as the Eve Dallas books. This very definitely did not even come close, IMHO.

If you’re a Bostonian you’ll enjoy the driving into different neighborhoods with their pithy descriptions by the protagonist Carlyle. I personally got tired of the endless series of tailing cabs, nor was I much interested in Ms. Carlyle’s depressing personal and romantic life.

The one bright spot was Paolina, Carlyle’s assigned Little Sister. She was delightful. But it’s a part of Carlyle’s life she keeps separate from her work life, so only limited glimpses of Paolina are shown, although the story uses Carlyle’s personal commitment to Paolina as a motivation reason for solving not just the murder, but a bigger mystery involving the IRA and the Mafia.

I managed to plow through the story, but none of the characters (save for Paolina) grabbed my interest. Deleting this from my Kindle and not interested at all in any further stories in the series.

I have really enjoyed reading the entire Carlotta Carlisle series! Unbelievably relevant even though this first book in a long series was written so long ago. Very fast paced, always complex plots that dove-tail within themselves. Carlotta is more interesting as the series goes on. Carlotta is a typical female protagonist: single, divorced, strong, independent to a fault, and so scrappy! The world created in Boston is detailed and vivid: personal life with 2 ongoing beaus, one the good boy, one the bad boy, and motherly role with her “little sister” and the seedy night world of the cab company offer interesting characters and worlds unfamiliar to explore. Not too gruesome, no explicit sex, but realistic and interesting. Go beyond the first book – Carlotta’s world is worth the effort, and this is one of the classic female mystery series. If you like Paretsky, Grafton and Cornwell – you will be happy to discover this series!
