I admit I am new to the cozy mystery genre so perhaps this is the way they all are written. I might have liked the series better if I had not read the 4 together and seen how much she copies herself in every story. She uses the exact same phrases to describe people and their actions. Apparently our sleuth eats nothing but chicken salad sandwiches and rock fish; the police chief is constantly trying to get the lid off of his pain medicine. The one person was only ever identified as chubby which was stated each time the person was seen. She missed the chance to really bring the island alive instead of just telling you things. For instance, she would say the “Magnolias” sat on the deck and gossiped. Tell what they were saying. A woman falls to her death from the airplane that a groom is jumping out of and she is wearing a wedding gown identical to the bride’s. This gave some great fodder for gossip: he was going to marry them both and they would be sister wives, etc. and the old fisherman who we hear about ad nauseam could have been the biggest gossip, bringing the wildest stories into the cafe. It would have been fun and you could go anywhere with it. Our sleuth never really solves anything; people just spontaneously confess in every single story. There is something that is always left hanging in each crime that just is not explained away; I kept thinking it might be a carry over to the next story; nope, just didn’t want to make up that part of the story I guess. And that police chief was written so poorly, apparently she thinks it’s manly to be mercurial, I just saw him as a nut case. Our sleuth walks in his office and he screams at her before he even knows why she is there? How long would he keep his job? And then the next minute he is being lovey-dovey with her. Every single evening she walks on the beach we have to hear how a dog greets her by putting his paws on her shoulders; I think we got it the first two times. There was real potential here and perhaps these things won’t bother others. I like writers that use descriptive language, throw in a simile or metaphor once in a while, and don’t constantly repeat themselves. With a little imagination and humor these stories could have been 5 star; I might even have been able to forgive the confessions in each story.
