Waste of time

Wow, really weak story from a guy who has written some of my fave novels in the past. What happened? I almost never leave a bad review because I can find something I like – character, setting, pace, quips – something! But, this was a bad Odd Thomas / By the Light of the Moon takeoff. A bad Saturday Night Live sketch of a Koontz book. Couldn’t even finish it. Got to page 300 and called the time of death. And I had looked forward to this one for so long. Everything was just…yuck! Bad pacing, bad dialogue. And just for the record “shapen” is Not A Real Word. And like nothing happens – nothing at all. It does not take 250 pages to sell two cars.

Nobody else combines fantasy and fear and laughter and sheer wonder, nobody.

But of course you are wondering: what kind of a Koontz is this? Sheer terror like Velocity or slapstick comedy like Tick Tock? And is there a dog??

It’s one of his most magical kinds, like the Brother Odd series, which combines everything, so that there are moments of horror and a terrific romance and lots of funny dialogue. And yes, yes, yes, there is a dog! (Few authors create lovable dogs like Koontz. This one was originally an attack dor. Don’t worry; the dog becomes adorable.)

Quinn was abandoned as a baby, and found by three men on. a highway in “coyote country. Had one of those creatures found me, it.. would have regarded me as a Grubhub delivery.”

Nobody would adopt Quinn from his orphanage run by nuns even though “I came with twelve years of free tuition at the Catholic school of your choice, free diapers, and a plenary indulgence.”

I won’t reveal any of the plot, so don’t worry. But here are some of the snappy lines Koontz wrote that will encourage you to read this book:

The refrigerator was stocked with a variety of cheeses and lunch meats and at least forty bottles of Corona. A small bowl contained four eyeballs.
