I’m a fan of the author and his style, not going to lie. But the things being said by people WHO DIDN’T EVEN READ THE BOOK are asinine at worse, and disingenuous at best. The “violence against animals” as they put it, was done in the context of the genre and the authors other books (which one person claimed to read but obviously didn’t based on their “didn’t read” review). And if you don’t like harsh language, then the Thriller genre isn’t for you. Not everything can be some cookie cutter fake romance disguised as a different genre that likes to put in every month’s free reads.
In summary, the book is solid in comparison to his other work and I never give anything 5 stars because to me that means perfection and I’ve yet to find, use, or read anything that I’d call that. But if you didn’t even read the book and try to bring a review score down just because one person who obviously either didn’t ACTUALLY read it or just isn’t cut out for Thrillers that aren’t trying to use the genre to disguise some fake romance soap opera crap said something in a review…. DON’T LEAVE A REVIEW!
This also goes for people who leave reviews for products without actually using them.

“No Way Back” from the painful

experience reading this book!
I cannot remember ever giving a First Reads title only 2 stars, but this J. B. Turner’s “No Way Back” has that distinction. The language is gratuitously vile. Good luck going 2 pages without being blasted by f-bombs, divine epithets, and for kicks and giggles, let’s shoot a pet.
Jack McNeal is supposed to be a new protagonist in this new series by seasoned author, Turner. He’s had tragedy and is suffering emotional trauma. Good for him, he’s getting help. It’s supposed to make him seem more sensitive or something? Epic fail, IMO. He is driven to find out who killed his ex-wife, whatever it takes. I’ll give him that.
It is a fast paced story that races around D. C. and the mid-Atlantic, has lots of violence with no respect for traditional norms and political intrigue that include the upper echelons of government. Oh, and in case you missed it at the beginning, there’s enough disgusting language for a years worth of this entire genre. Can someone at Publishing please find this author a Thesaurus?!?

Wow–2 of the 5 reviews so far give 1 star and are from people who admit in the review that they didn’t read the book. In fact they won’t read the book because another review says that a pet was shot. I believe the main storyline of the book kicks off with a human being being murdered. So it would appear that there are multiple creatures who are fictionally harmed in this book. If you don’t want to read books that contain that, you probably shouldn’t be reading any thrillers, including this one.
OK–now is when I confess that I didn’t read this book either. But I feel like the author at least deserves to have the non-reader ratings balanced out a little. For those that got past the star rating, I’d recommend you focus on the reviews from people who actually read the book. You know what I find sad? That people are totally ok with any storyline… humans being killed, children hurt or abused, major crimes and just pure evil, but they lose their mind when a story involves an animal being hurt. It is totally beyond comprehension and shows a real imbalance in their morals, and I believe reveals a lot about their psychological profile. I mean really? Ignore those reviews, because they are not real, read it and make up your own mind.

glad for the heads-up in the first review. will not be selecting this as my December read and will not purchase any book that includes violence against animals in the story line.

Yes, there is a lot of swearing, but it’s completely appropriate contextually. I found nothing off-putting about it. It’s not gratuitous. That said, if you don’t like swearing, this book is not for you.
Beyond that, this book just did not pull me in. It just feels superficial, no depth whatsoever.
Well written enough for those attracted to this type of book, but not for me. Reads like something out of the 1950s + swearing.

A lot of profanity, yes, but it didn’t seem out of place to me. The story doesn’t make me feel like I must keep reading. It’s just ok.

Needs to express my view of this book

I am very glad to have read the other reviews. I will not download a book with profanity especially the f-bombs. Secondly, I will never knowingly down load a book with cruelty to animals. Thirdly, I wouldn’t dream of downloading a book with not even a 2 as a rating. Why thinks they are being so generous by allowing these “free” books each month is beyond me. Every book they offer is usually terrible with many negative ratings. The couple I did download in hopes just maybe other people were wrong. Both times I deleted the book after only reading a small portion.

JB Turner is a well-known thriller writer with a very successful long-running series ,under his belt, the Jon Reznick books.
With that in mind I was hoping for a great read when I bought “No Way Back” , the first in a new series featuring Jack McNeil, an Internal Affairs Detective with the NYPD.
After the tragic death of their young son McNeil and his political journalist wife Caroline split up. A few months later Caroline is found dead in circumstances that don’t ring true and it emerges that she was herself investigating a previous suspicious death that was panicking powerful people. From there the story heads into political conspiracy and dark forces at play trying to deflect McNeil from finding the truth.
From the promising premise ,sadly, this is a bit of a mess. Most of the first 30% or so is various people commiserating with McNeil while his Father and Brother attempt to break the record for the most swear words in a sentence,which gets very tedious. The plot chugs along and threatens to explode into full-on thriller mode at any moment without actually doing so, often it’s outright bizarre and there’s no obvious reason for various character’s behaviour. There’s no real tension,and worse no conclusive ending either. I found myself skimming through and just felt cheated at the end.
This book has the kind of plot that Simon Kernick specialises in that takes off from the start and twists and turns with the reader not wanting to put the book down. This is just a damp squib sadly that limps along and ends in disappointment.

Not Recommended- the idea/theme has been done before so many times

I feel as though I’ve read this book before. Of course I haven’t as it’s a first read but the idea is unoriginal and completely predictable. I could skim read many pages and not miss anything at all. So, succinctly, my initial interest quickly waned and the whole thing got boring.
There has to be a tick list somewhere that some authors rely on (hence lack of originality). In this case: Internal Affairs Cop with a trauma that has affected his work, suspicious death of cop’s wife- cop’s dead wife, a journalist, has classified information on high ranking politicians- corrupt political aides- chase to reveal the truth and avoid further deaths and so on. All done before, many times.
Hugely disappointing and not a book I would recommend.
