They sell their home and embrace a full-time RV life.

They spend six weeks in a nudist RV park, chase after Dennis Hopper’s ghost in Taos, deny themselves a Koi fishing expedition in Cripple Creek, learn the art of the ‘wike’ in Leadville, survive a snowstorm outside Colorado Springs, stroll across the London Bridge in Lake Havasu City, and nestle in the desert in southern California as the pandemic rages.

It is packed with helpful tips to becoming full-time nomads and offers the complicated truths of what it’s like to live in an RV during a terrifying pandemic.

The Authors

Running from COVID in Our RV Cocoon PDF

Retired from a 40-year career in social work, Gerri Almand found her voice in humorous travel writing when her husband insisted they buy an RV and travel the country. The Reluctant RV Wife, Home Is Where the RV Is, and Running from Covid in our RV Cocoon chronicle Gerri’s transformation from initial RV reluctance to an ecstatic embrace of fulltime nomadism. –This text refers to the paperback edition.

Gerri grew up in the rural South, received an undergraduate degree from Florida State University, and completed a Master’s of Social Work degree at the University of Maryland. During her forty years of social work practice, she worked with children and families in a variety of settings. Little did she realize during those decades of writing evaluations, social histories, and investigative reports that she’d write creative nonfiction books after she retired.

Gerri had enjoyed a lifetime of gardening prior to her husband’s RV purchase and the ensuing lifestyle changes. As a Master Gardener, she created an award-winning yard and nurtured over two hundred orchids on the lanai of their home in Tampa, Florida.

Always an avid reader, Gerri began writing with intent following retirement. Her works have appeared in The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature, Wanderlust: A Literary Map, Kaleidoscopte WoJo,The Florida Writer, Orchids: The Bulletin of the American Orchid Society, The Sun, Odet, and The Tampa Bay Sounding. When she and her husband started RVing, Gerri found a new voice as an ambivalent RVer.

The Reluctant RV Wife, Gerri’s multiply-awarded debut book, was released in 2019.It explores RV travel, aging, marriage, freedom, and the meaning of life. Home Is Where the RV Is, released in 2020, chronicles two additional years of RV travel. Now in their fifth year, reluctance is Gerri’s tongue-in-cheek schtick. She and her still-excited husband are now full time RVers with the open road as their home.

Her Story Ended Yet COVID Continues
September 8, 2021

A good account of one couples COVID experience. My wife and I evacuated FL in March 2020, hurriedly leaving our sailboat and driving hard towing our Airstream. We isolated, overnighted in Rest Areas and made it home to Durango CO in record time. Although we returned to FL to market and sell the yacht, I was more than happy to finally depart that foolish State. Now it’s September 2021 and the pandemic is raging once again, for the reasons cited by Gerri – lying politicians and people unwilling to sacrifice for the common good. God help us.

Great book
July 10, 2021

Another great book from Gerri Almand, author of the Reluctant RV Wife and Home is Where the RV Is. Imagine leaving home for a 2 month inaugural trip in your brand new RV. Then Coved hits and you can’t go home. Trying to stay ahead of the epidemics Gerry and her husband Mike are forced to change how and where they camp. Then they sell their home while on the road and become true full timers! A great read.

An interesting chronicle of the first year of covid
December 16, 2021

It was interesting to see how Gerri and her husband coped with covid in an RV and without a fixed address. This book didn’t seem to have as many interesting anecdotes as the first two books, but that’s probably because Gerri was not able to do much traveling when trying to isolate from covid. Her writing is always wonderful, and she can even make RV park bathrooms into a story. I found myself at times judging Gerri and her husband for the choices they made during covid (going to Mardi Gras in New Orleans when the whole country knew that Mardi Gras was going to spread a huge amount of infection’s, continuing to eat in restaurants until the restaurants physically shut down, traveling across multiple states when the rest of us were being told to quarantine in our own homes and avoid going out at all). This is just my opinion and does not affect my rating of her book, but maybe other people who tried to be extremely conscientious in the pre vaccine era of coronavirus will find themselves similarly annoyed by her choices.

Running but worried

Hopefully they got their vaccinations. They managed to hunker down while living in the RV during covid , hiking, and meeting people, setting up precautions.
These precautions were exactly what lots of people were doing , not everyone but most. Analyzing there decisions and the isolation described is understandable. To make the best of this difficult time
This new delta variant will add more stress, no one knows what will happen with that one.

Was not entertaining
October 11, 2021

I really enjoyed Gerri’s first two books, which included many great RV stories and were well written. I did not enjoy this book as Gerri spent the entire book running from COVID and complaining about anyone who did not social distance or wear a mask. I wish she would have focused more on the RV stories and lessons learned, but this obviously was a trying time for Gerri and her husband. Hopefully, we will have more fun RV stories in the future!

Refreshing look at 2020

Love idea that people can change, grow, change, and grow some more. What we value can change too. The author hits the nail on the head when she relates her joy, fears, failures and triumphs. Will continue to watch for more books.

A fine chronicle of a strange time

Gerri’s story rings true for any of us who’ve made an RV part of our COVID isolation strategy. Plus, the editing is flawless, and she never confuses it’s with its!
