An utterly immersive psychological thriller told through alternating perspectives with not one but two twisted mysteries and suspense at every turn of the page.

Marissa and Matthew enter an unconventional type of counseling with Avery, who is no longer a licensed therapist, for reasons you’ll come to learn. From the onset of their first session, it is revealed that Marissa has been unfaithful to her husband and their status as the golden couple is quickly shattered. Marissa deeply loves Matthew and wants to regain his trust and their love.

Avery is not your average therapist. Her technique goes way beyond the office. She becomes embroiled in her patients’ lives to the point of seeming almost creepy, but they are down with it because she claims that her method works.

Meanwhile, Avery has her own issues, and they go deep. A former patient disclosed inside information about her employer, which disturbed Avery to the point that she felt morally obligated to breach doctor-patient privilege to the authorities and is now convinced that she is being pursued by the company in question and her life is in danger.

As the tension builds, so do the secrets. Trust no one. Just when you think you know one character, suspicion sets in. Hendricks and Pekkanen weave an enticing cast of cunning characters with intersecting lives in this sleepy D.C. suburb and gift readers with a most satisfying ending.

I couldn’t catch my breath through the entire story. The twists and turns kept me guessing until the end. Here’s the thing–I ALWAYS figure out who did it far sooner than I like. This time it took me a lot longer to do so. Brava, ladies. This was well done.

Compelling read with lots of characters

The measure of a good book is if you keep trying to work in time to read it when you shouldn’t be. This book kept my interest from start to finish. Some don’t like all the points of view but I did. The only downside for me was the number of characters I needed to keep track of. Still I loved the book and will read others by these two authors. Loved that they wrote this during the pandemic but still found a way to do it.
