Meet the Harrisons!
A mother running for Senate, a son running from his problems, and a daughter running straight into trouble…

From Grant Ginder, the author of The People We Hate at the Wedding, comes a poignant, funny, and slyly beguiling novel which proves that, like democracy, family is a messy and fragile thing ―perfect for fans of Veep’s biting humor, the family drama of Succession, and the joys of Kevin Wilson’s Nothing to See Here.

Nancy Harrison is running for Senate, and she’s going to win, goddamnit. Not that that’s her slogan, although it could be. She’s said all the right things. Passed all the right legislation. Chapped her lips kissing babies. There’s just one problem: her grown children.

Greta and Nick Harrison are adrift. Nick is floundering in his attempts to write a musical about the life of Joan Didion (called Hello to All That!). And then there’s his little sister Greta. Smart, pretty, and completely unmotivated, allowing her life to pass her by like the shoppers at the Apple store where she works.

One morning the world wakes up not to Nancy making headlines, but her daughter, Greta. She’s in Paris. With extremist protestors. Throwing a bottle of champagne through a beloved bistro’s front window. In order to save her campaign, not to mention her daughter, Nancy and Nick must find Greta before it’s too late.

Smart, funny, and surprisingly tender, Let’s Not Do That Again shows that family, like politics, can hurt like a mother.

So Good, So Funny, So Moving, So Great

How can a novel with the premise that someone is making a musical built around Joan Didion go wrong? Well, I can think of about ten million ways, which makes Grant Ginder’s triumphantly hilarious and touching and gossip-y and gloriously outrageous new novel, LET’S NOT DO THAT AGAIN, all the more a miracle.

The prose flows like hot fudge over a delicious ice cream of stunningly unique character development and whiplash quick plotting. Never a dull moment, nor a wasted word, this novel is everything a novel should be. You won’t want to stop reading once you start, and when you find you’ve raced to the finish, you’ll be hitting yourself for having not savored it more — and moaning about how long you’ll have to wait for the next Grant Ginder delight.

I think I’ll read it again!!

If you’re looking for a trashy beach-read, look elsewhere. Ginder writes sharp, killer prose and his sentences are compact. No wasted words here. LET’S NOT DO THAT AGAIN is the most entertaining novel I’ve read in a long time. Bloody good fun!!

Mixing politics and family makes a mess!

April 6, 2022

Let’s Not Do That Again is the type of story that the New York Times Book Review will probably love. If you love politics, this fictional account of a political family will probably also be perfect for you. If you find politics exhausting, annoying and/or completely suspended from reality you will either find this amusing or boring as the consequences of politics play out among the Harrison family. A family that Nancy marries into, but when her congressman husband storms out after a drunken fight and proceeds to kill himself, one that she decides is worth pursuing herself. Her party and her husband’s friends are going to hand it to so she has to fight tooth and nail for everything, alienating her kids and losing her grip on the world the rest of us inhabit. And naturally, after twenty years of success in Congress she’s ready to pursue a Senate seat. If only her son would come back to her campaign and help her out, instead of having a life of his own. And if pesky middling former actor Chip Carmichael wasn’t her opponent. And last but not least, if only she hadn’t reaped what she sowed and created a daughter she never had time for who’s no longer interested in towing the line and playing the dutiful daughter. In fact, Greta has had enough. She doesn’t just want to escape her mother’s world; she wants to destroy it, egged on by her white supremacist French boyfriend. Which sends the reader, Nancy, her campaign team and her family through endless news cycles and polling numbers that remind the reader why the day after the polls close is one to take a deep breath and enjoy stories about puppies and kittens being rescued before everyone gears up for the next election mere days after the current winners are announced. The rote and somewhat predictable storyline finally takes an interesting turn near the end, when Greta makes a decision that there’s no going back from, and that forces everyone to decide what priorities are most important – family or politics? I personally don’t love politics, so I struggled to care about the majority of the book. I won’t necessarily say I’m glad I stuck it out the whole way through, but the plot twist did seem to help make it worth the effort to keep reading.Let’s Not Do That Again PDF
