Floriography is a full-color guide to the historical uses and secret meanings behind an impressive array of flowers and herbs. The book explores the coded significances associated with various blooms, from flowers for a lover to flowers for an enemy.

The language of flowers was historically used as a means of secret communication. It soared in popularity during the 19th century, especially in Victorian England and the U.S., when proper etiquette discouraged open displays of emotion. Mysterious and playful, the language of flowers has roots in everything from the characteristics of the plant to its presence in folklore and history. Researched and illustrated by popular artist Jessica Roux, this book makes a stunning display piece, conversation-starter, or thoughtful gift.

This book is stunning! The cover art is printed on the cover, so there is no dust jacket and the book will stay nice. The illustrations are beautiful, with thick pages and gorgeous illustrations. It describes the origins and meaning of each flower type and makes suggestions for pairing it with other flowers. It gives me a sense of renewal during this unsettling time. I’m keeping it on my nightstand so I can flip through it before bedtime. It would make a beautiful gift.

I totally judged this book by its cover! I hadn’t even heard of it before, saw it in a targeted ad, and purchased four copies! It’s absolutely breathtaking and I immediately thought of others who would love it! The illustrations are perfect for Nature Study inspiration, and the text offers something unique and unexpected – each full-spread page is a monograph focused specifically on a the meanings and history of each flower, and even how to pair them with others to create a heartfelt bouquet. Be aware that there’s a little bit of mysticism included, but nothing that I would be worried to share with my children in historical context

I really enjoyed the art in this book, but I would loved a little more information about the history of floriography and the different meanings and combinations. Meaning of each flower and a few combinations were shown, but I just wanted more in that regard. I would also have loved some information about the seasonality or natural history of the flowers – where can you find this and when, can you grow it in your yard and when would it bloom, etc.

 Great Visual References, Lacks Bibliography

February 16, 2022

I’m studying flower language for a project I’m working on and this is one of the first books I purchased because it was highly rated. I will fully admit the visual references for each plant and flower are highly detailed and lovingly crafted. The artist clearly put a lot of work into each one to make them easily distinguished.
The actual writing left a lot to be desired. I’ve done some of my own research online here and there and while some more modern interpretations of flowers (hemlock for danger, roses for love, baby’s breath for childbirth) are consistent, others were not. This leads to my only major criticism for this book. It lacks a bibliography or notable way to trace her sources. She even states in the introduction that many florists have assigned their own meaning to certain flowers for use on their own or in bouquets and I find that rather disconcerting.
Overall a great visual reference to keep on hand, but I’ll have to look elsewhere to learn a more in-depth study for Flower Language.

 So Beautiful

I love this book! It’s beautiful in every way. Everything about it is lovely and the quality is superb. The way Jessica illustrates flowers is moody and gorgeous. Her descriptions of each flower’s meaning and her suggestions on floral pairings for different types of meanings is fun to read and educational. It makes me want to put together bouquets to deliver to people I know so that I can send them secret messages through flowers. I would highly recommend purchasing this!
