D.R. “I’m a homeschool mom with a 6 year old who HATES reading. He loves doung this book!! The first day we got it he completed 11 pages!! It’s a very big book with 206 pages. This books builds up to sight words, blended words. I highly recommend this book. I have included pictures of the first lesson my son did.”

Kate “Mixed feelings. This wasn’t what I was expecting and I almost returned it, but my son loves it. I wanted a “curriculum” to teach my soon-to-be kindergartener to read. I was looking for something hands-on with activities and writing practice. This is not that. It does have activities, but no writing. My son is probably 90% through the book and he’s definitely not reading, but he’s closer than he was before and I think this book helped his develop the concept of reading. However, there’s just 2 pages assigned to each sound and then occasional review pages. So it really doesn’t allow enough time to really master a sound or build on what you already know.

My son was eager to do it each day and did 5-10 lessons at a time. I do think him going through this will make it easier for him to learn to read, but I don’t feel like it actually taught him to read.”

Ari Z “I am an English teacher in Israel, and since this year I am teaching elementary school (which means students who never had any exposure to English before) I was looking for a book to guide me from beginning to end. I needed a book that will explicitly tell me what to say to the students, what to do throughout each lesson, how to present the material, etc. At the same time, it was also very important to me that the vocabulary in the texts and worksheets the book provides will be easy enough for my students. After long research and investigation, I decided to buy “Learn to Read” and I’m so satisfied with it! This book literally contains lesson plans, which tell you exactly what to say and do. It’s so organised and so teacher-friendly + students-friendly. The lesson plans save so much time, so I barely need to sit down and prepare them by myself for hours. The vocabulary is basic, the font is very good (which is crucial when it comes to the letters a and g), the pictures are lovely and the worksheets go well with the other activities my students have in their own workbooks. Another important thing is that the book is divided into two parts – the first one is the individual letters (in the order they should be taught and not in the alphabetical order, which is GREAT) and the second part is phonics, digraphs, blends, etc. So yeah… It’s perfect for beginners. At first, I was debating between “Teach Your Child to Read in 101 Lessons”, “The Reading Lesson – Teach Your Child to Read in 20 Easy Lessons” and “Learn to Read” (the book I purchased). I think the first two are best for English speaking children, so if you’re looking for a book to teach reading overseas, go with “Learn to Read”. I highly recommend it.”

Mushee “I was super disappointed with this book, especially after all the good reviews. It is written much more like a lesson plan for parents to follow than an activity book that a child can open up and do with a parent’s help. I originally bought this book for my 6 yr old son who is in kindergarten and learning to read. When I got the book I realized that most of the lessons in here are too easy for him as he already knows all his letters and all the sight words in the book. I think maybe I could use some of the lessons in the back of the book with him. So, I decided to try to use this book with my 4 yr old son, who is not in school yet and doesn’t know any of his letters. I found it to be too hard for him. It doesn’t make any sense to me to try to teach a child to sound out words before he really knows any letters, or even after he only knows a couple of letters. And at any rate my son didn’t really get that and couldn’t do it. There are not too many activities to do for each lesson either. I am considering returning this book. I might continue to try to use it here and there but I prefer other activity books I have purchased.

…We did decide to return it. It’s just not what I was looking for.”
