Features of Horse Brain Human Brain PDF

An eye-opening game-changer of a book that sheds new light on how horses learn, think, perceive, and perform, and explains how to work with the horse’s brain instead of against it.Horse Brain Human Brain PDF

In this illuminating book, brain scientist and horsewoman Janet Jones describes human and equine brains working together. Using plain language, she explores the differences and similarities between equine and human ways of negotiating the world. Mental abilities—like seeing, learning, fearing, trusting, and focusing—are discussed from both human and horse perspectives. Throughout, true stories of horses and handlers attempting to understand each other—sometimes successfully, sometimes not—help to illustrate the principles.

Horsemanship of every kind depends on mutual interaction between equine and human brains. When we understand the function of both, we can learn to communicate with horses on their terms instead of ours. By meeting horses halfway, we achieve many goals.

  • We improve performance.
  • We save valuable training time.
  • We develop much deeper bonds with our horses.
  • We handle them with insight and kindness instead of force or command.
  • We comprehend their misbehavior in ways that allow solutions.
  • We reduce the human mistakes we often make while working with them.

Instead of working against the horse’s brain, expecting him to function in unnatural and counterproductive ways, this book provides the information needed to ride with the horse’s brain. Each principle is applied to real everyday issues in the arena or on the trail, often illustrated with true stories from the author’s horse training experience. Horse Brain, Human Brain offers revolutionary ideas that should be considered by anyone who works with horses.

Great book for spouses of equestrians

December 23, 2020

My wife has 2 horses. I used to ride before we were married (57 years ago), I don’t have to anymore. But I feed them in the morning and do the stalls. I enjoy interacting with them. This book helps me understand them and how to better interact with them. The book is very well written and answers most of the questions I’ve had about what they see, hear, smell, and feel. The book has made my interaction with them even more enjoyable. That may save my life since my wife has a sign in the kitchen: “If you had to choose between your husband and a million dollars, how many horses would you buy?”

 Superb writing

July 22, 2020

I have been a voracious reader since age six, and am now in my mid-nineties.
My most recent read was Horse Brain Human Brain, published by Trafalgar Square.
If you are a devout reader, don’t miss this. If you are not, please begin with this beautifully written book.
Every sentence will enlighten you about something you should know -and probably don’t.
A thankful reader, Lamont.

 Fascinating Book– I love it

Dr Jones is knowledgable about equine and human neuroanatomy and horse training. She has explanations of what works with a horse and what doesn’t. It is both practical and theoretical. Her passion for science is only outshone by her passion for horses. I am only ½ way through the book. My only stumbling block so far is the section where we need to experimentally determine our own posture and proprioception; this is pretty tricky, I will need someone to photograph me or help me set up paraphernalia, or photograph me on a horse.

I like the fact that she explains why horses need positive reinforcement (never negative) for example. There are fascinating chapters on the sensory abilities of horses. She discuses the feedback loop of equine-human communication; how we use our various senses such as touch and balance and proprioception to create brain to brain, nervous system to nervous system feed back loops. Of course once these loops are established, I would claim that the emotions of horse and rider come into play.

This is a book that I am sure I will read more than once. It is a real pleasure, and a rare find. I hope that it gains great popularity—for the good of horses and humans.

 Can not recommend.

My biggest concern with this book is the inappropriate advice on training, given as if the recommendations are accepted practice. Additionally, the information on behavioral science and positive reinforcement, and the use of food for rewards, is grossly misleading and inaccurate.
