Jay Smith is a full-time aerospace systems engineer, designing systems for aircraft and spacecraft. He is a chartered member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and his goals are to write “high-quality books which make the subject of engineering affordable, accessible, useful, and interesting”.

Jay Smith was born in the UK, achieving a first class MEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering with Business Management from the University of Warwick, before undertaking postgraduate classes in Advanced Fluid Dynamics, Advanced Robotics at Warwick, and Airframe Systems Design at Wrexham Glyndŵr University.

He has for 10 years taught secondary education, further education (FE) and higher education (HE) from Key Stage 3 up to undergraduate level in mathematics, statistics, chemistry, physics and engineering, holding his first role as lecturer at the age of 19 (studying during the day, and teaching community college classes at night). Afterwards, he has worked on water filtration and micro-hydroelectric power projects in Uganda, and interned in chemicals manufacturing in Suffolk. After postgraduate studies, he held the role as an aerospace engineer in both design and maintenance organisations across three countries, dedicated to the mechanical design and performance of military surveillance aircraft.

Starting at the age of 24, Jay was Programme Leader of Aerospace Engineering, shaping and delivering bachelor’s degrees on behalf of Lancaster University and Blackpool & The Fylde College. His expertise has enabled him to lead a breadth of classes, including multiple semesters of electrical and electronic engineering, analytical methods, functional mathematics, undergraduate mathematics, project management, aircraft and aerospace principles, materials engineering, and aircraft propulsion, whilst pioneering flipped classroom approach to lecturing, and the use of ed-tech.

Jay is an active STEM Ambassador, having supported projects and events, and continues to inspire the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians by delivering engineering talks and events at schools, colleges and universities in London, Cambridge, West Midlands, Lincolnshire and Lancashire.

Like the FE Reference Handbook, but handier

It seems to contain a lot of the really good equations, tables, and figures that the FE Reference Handbook has, while trimming out a lot of the fat (engineering economy and ethics, environmental and chemical engineering, etc). Plus, other content that is more useful to the practicing engineer is added in.

The result is a nice, small book that’s easy to tote around, but has everything you need for any back-of-the-napkin calculation you might need to do.

Read the reviews and bought it as a gift. Turns out it is one of his favorite things. He referred to it as an engineers bible. He loved the review as well as a lot of formulas and math. Says he wished he had gotten this a few years ago when he was starting school.

Just the facts, very little explanation, logic, or examples

I don’t have time to write reviews, so when I do, it is because I think that the book is either good or bad.

This seems to be a self-published book. It is well laid-out, with good formatting and an extensive list of formulas. It specifically disclaims any responsibility for accuracy on its copyright page.

The title, however, is “practical databook.” There are some tables of data, which the notes list as being taken from other sources, but this book is primarily a list of formulas with very, very little explanation and few examples (the pictures under the Pearson Correlation Coefficient on page 34 being a notable exception).

If you know the formulas or need a data point that you could look up on the internet anyway, then this book is a reminder of how to “plug and chug.” If you need a refresher, then this is not the book for you.

This is a useful book, providing just the right level of detail for basic engineering and physical science applications, not too much and not too little. It gives a high level overview and practical equations on most engineering and physical science topics, with a nice mathematics section in the beginning. I especially liked that the author included some Ashby diagrams, these are helpful to see the big picture of materials behavior for a given applications. I would hope that the second edition might include a few more.

This is a reference book and it does not provide examples, and it has minimal information on concepts, so you kind of need to know the basics to use it. It’s a small book, well formatted and easy to read. It is not a comprehensive reference on all topics, and covers the main ones only, but if you want a short and concise book, that’s what you need. There were a few typos in materials values, and the sections on Fluid Mechanics and Systems seemed a little light, but overall I was pleased with this book. Many engineers and physical scientists will find this a very handy reference.

Some notation is geared toward British readers (e.g., the section on alloy steels), but most international readers will find the content relevant.

Another plus is that the Kindle version is formatted just like the physical version (I have both), and reads perfectly, none of the unreadable equations like you often see in other technical Kindle books.

This book is amazing! It is an excellent reference for me as an engineering student. It serves as both a refresher of important concepts as well as a glossary of formulas. I no longer have to go looking through my textbook or notes for a formula; instead, I consult this book and find precisely what I need. It is very well-written and organized. Definitely worth every penny. Extremely handy for all engineering majors!

Covers basic mathematical, mechanical, and electrical formulas that you would typically use. Not all encompassing, for a full reference guide I would recommend Marks’ Standard Handbook.
