Appalachian Tales, the latest book by Deanna Edens is another interesting tale of people who have lived with troubles loss, heartbreaks and major tragedies, but through it all the characters remain strong and emerge on the other side with their faith and tenacity intact. This story depicts the hard life of West Virginia miners and how neighbors and friend stuck by one another to get through the rough times. Reading this story makes those of us who have lived through these rough times recall and appreciate the great people of West Virginia who, still today, retain the love and caring woven throughout this story.

I loved this book and the history included within. Very insightful. I remember passing the billboard in Mount Hope WV of the Soccer children many years ago and have newspaper articles about it throughout the years. So very sad. Loved the book and it is very well written.

The book was well researched, well written and, most importantly, just plain fun to read. My only complaint would be that it was too short. I could have gone on listening to Nadia’s tales for many hours. The characters are so well developed and the imagery is so clear that the stories just sweep you away to another time and place.

It was about West Virginia!! Where I lived the first 16 years of my life. Many locations around the state. Three years in Charleston. I reminisce of days gone by as the names of places I recall appear on the pages. I am especially fond of historical / historical fiction, people, places, changes over time. Tho I bought this book for where it was about and not necessarily who or what it was about, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and characters. Very well written and gentle, simple writing style.

Nadia is a fictional character telling her friends her early life history with the use of her black and white “memory album” . True historical events that took place showing something of the way immigrants pulled together in the coal mine explosion and how sometimes there were tragedies that were beyond comprehension. I liked the fact that this book was Not based on black and white , rich man\servant. It was about being an American who was brave enough to stand up and care.
