Awesome book! As a doctor and a forensic science addict myself.. I loved this book. I wish I could read Malayalam so that I could read the original version..
However in page 110 it’s mentioned as 0.38 Smith and Wesson pistol while the picture shows a revolver and the text inside picture also reads as revolver..I really don’t know how this escaped the translation as It clearly doesn’t mean pistol..kindly rectify it ..thanks

Dr Umadathan’s autobiography Dead Men tell Tales translated from The Malayalam is an extremely engaging memoir of a police surgeon and his numerous cases some controversial some not so much but nevertheless each enlightening in its own way. If you have been mesmerised by the world of forensic science, binged on CSI and Bones and other such shows which showed you the Western glam side of forensic medicine then this is the book you have to read. Some of the cases that Dr Umadathan worked on are quite familiar for most Malayalees. The foremost being the notorious Kurup case (now a feature film) the Pollakulam case( which still stands as baffling as ever and I still do not buy the doctors explanation) Professor Chacko case etc
This book is an incredibly engaging read and actually reads more like a detective novel with doctor handholding you through every case. I did learn some intricacies of forensic science and I have to say this was one memoir I thoroughly enjoyed.

A tresure of a book

If you enjoy true crime and forensic detection, this memori is an absolute delight to read. The translation and language does justice to the content – there are a few typos (it doesn’t take away any delight in reading). The contributions of doctors like Dr. Umadathan is rarely known or acknowledged-I was in wow of the forensic intelligence and collaboration between them and police to solve some of the infamous cases. The content in this book would make for a thrilling OTT series – an ode to the science and the doctors such as esteemed Dr. Umadathan, the author.
