Late 19th century NYC comes alive in

March 1, 2022

this fast paced serial killer thriller.

Elizabeth is the only female reporter at a major NY newspaper. Of course, they assign her to the society page. Late to work one morning she believes she’s witnessed a murder. Her boss adamantly refuses to let her follow up on it and sends her off to the Astor Mansion to cover a garden party. Another consequence lands her face to face with a very unusual corpse and Elizabeth gets her wish to become a crime reporter. She also gets so much more.

Author, Carole Lawrence, is brilliant at the descriptive prose. The sights, sounds, smells – well, all the senses are engaged while reading “Cleopatra’s Dagger”. There’s a good mix of mystery, family, friends, and professional relationships to lay groundwork for a series. I’d be a reader, for sure.

While has this title marked as Historical Thriller, it’s really more a period fiction piece. There’s not a bunch of history woven thru the text the story just takes place in 1880 and the setting and all the accompanying stuff is appropriate. That took research on the author’s part, for sure, but it’s seamless and less heavy for the reader.

Altho’ there are a number of murders, this isn’t a gruesome story and the violence is light – not quite cozy but not offensive. There’s one sexual scene that borders on rape. It’s quick and not descriptive. Foul language is restrained to 3 mild expletives. Were this a movie I’d rate it PG-13.

Lots of short chapters, very quick reading with excellent character development and hopes for another volume or more to follow, an excellent First Reads choice📚

Lots of historical research but the characters still felt modern to me.

I feel this wasn’t quite a 4 star book, for reasons I will go into below, but it was more than 3 stars; so let’s go with 3.5.
I didn’t dislike this book, but it wasn’t anything extraordinary. But take my rating with a grain of salt, before discarding this book as an option to read. Here’s why:I have read a lot of classics, written in many time periods, as well as very good writers of historical stories. I tend to be very attuned the nuances of speech and actions of characters and whether they sound authentic to the time period vs being more modern. Not all readers care about this and simply love a good story, regardless of all these details. That’s perfectly fine.
So if you are a reader who enjoys a story for entertainment or distraction, regardless of time period and don’t particularly care about subtle things that aren’t quite authentic to the historical setting, I do recommend the book. From that point of view then this is perhaps closer to a 4 star book.Cleopatras Dagger Kindle Edition PDF

The author clearly did her research in order to paint an accurate setting historically. The descriptions of late 19th century New York are detailed and the historical details correct.

But attention to the historic “feel” of a story (for me this is the way characters speak, how they act, what they say, how they say it, if the slang/choice of words make sense to the historical setting) is also important for me. And at times I almost felt like I was reading about modern people in a historical setting, if that makes any sense? Once again, if you don’t read alot of older books this won’t really stand out to you, or even matter, so in that case just ignore me. ;-D

For me personally, I also felt the story takes a while to get started; there’s a lot of background, description. The author tries almost too hard to set the scene of New York in the late 1800s. I also found the constant descriptions of all characters a little overdone. Instead of introducing the characters with a few deft, simple words, the reader is bogged down with too many contrasting, distracting details. For instance, once a character is described as a slimy slug, a few chapters later, a predatory bird. To me, this paints two very different things.

Even as I write this, I feel I’m being very nitpicky but… These are just little things that make the difference between an ok book, good for a few hours diversion, and a very good book that sticks with you or stands out. To me this was the former.

As to content, the darker underworld of 19th century New York is the focus here; poverty, illegal gambling, drunkenness, corruption and prostitution are themes throughout. There is one scene of sexual assault of a main character that affects her deeply.Cleopatras Dagger Kindle Edition PDF
