All Good, Best One Yet

Have read all the Aunt Bessie thus far. Well developed, engaging characters and solid, believable plots. Read The Flowers File the day it came out. Thoroughly enjoyable. Already looking forward to the next one.
Top Notch African Storytelling

Absolutely riveting. Umar’s evocative and immersive prose and deep characterization makes this an astonishing read. 11 year old Tongrot was a delightful counterweight through the book’s darker settings– her sense of discernment on how the The Grey works/doesn’t work gives a welcome shard of hope midway through the story. The metaphoric thread is unmissable. This is a powerful debut and from a fellow African storyteller, kudos brother.
Dark and grim reading from the beginning until the very end
April 1, 2022
Such a Beautiful Thing to Behold is a dystopian novel that is so dark and grim that I was happy to finally get to the end. The title is not reflective of the book.
There is not much hope in this story of young people looking for a way to survive. It appears poverty was a way of life for most of them even before the grey disease. The story is told from different perspectives but none of them are uplifting. The individuals that are the focus of the story are preteens to young adults. Their interactions with the remaining adults in the quarantined community range from caring to cruelty. The effects of these actions take as much of a toll as the disease.
I did not find this a satisfying reading experience. There is enough grim news and stories of children in sad situations that a fictional story about such misery is not something that I want to read. If you are looking for an entertaining or enjoyable reading experience, I recommend that you skip this one.

Intrigued by the premise of the description of this novel, a decision was made to order this for my selection of First Reads this month. It is a well written novel, and the descriptions are rich with similes. One example is that of the children – ‘children are reedy as sugarcane stalks’. Powerful imagery written throughout the pages.
Yes, it is a ‘dark’ novel but if the reader digs just a little deeper into the words, it is also a wonderful story of hope and survival…despite all odds. The village of Pilam has been devastated by a Grey vision epidemic . As a result, this village has been barricaded from the rest of adjoining towns. Thankfully, the Grey does not affect the children. The elderly are only able to see monochromatic slivers and eventually die. (Having vision problems myself, I was able to empathize with these elderly people). Indeed a scary thought.
Human nature is explored in great detail through the involvement of the characters. One example that comes to mind is when Dunka realizes that death brings a realization to see life more clearly. Sometimes it takes a real jolt to one’s system to awaken the human spirit.
A most thought-provoking, well written novel which does have darkness. The hope that the children have for survival and a new tomorrow outweighs any of their despair.
Highly recommended.
