The Writers
Michael J Leboffe was raised in North Park. He attended McKinley School, Wilson Junior High School, and Hoover High School in his sophomore year.
He is the campus coordinator for the NIH Funded Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program. The grant was awarded to SDSU and City College is one of three community colleges participating in it (Grossmont and Southwestern Colleges are the other two). Their goal is to assist underrepresented minorities in biomedical research matriculate to the University.

Broad in scope, shallow in depth

This book has fewer pictures than I expected. I bought this as a reference for my Medical Bacteriology class and it’s not as useful as I’d hoped, especially for the high price. While the pictures and descriptions of media and biochemical tests are good, there are no direct comparisons of different organisms on the same media, which is what I was hoping for. It’s broad in scope but shallow in depth. I will say that the images and material are high-quality, and the unbound paper version is a very nice option that does not suffer from a reduction of resolution.

Excellent Book for the Microbiology Student

This book is a fantastic resource for the microbiology student. The plates are beautiful and the captions are fantastically detailed. Especially important and impressive is the background text and the plates that describe the metabolic pathways that the various tests and growth media exploit to bring about their results. This book is actually as much of a chemistry refresher as it is a microbiology textbook and lab book all in one. Seeing the chemical plates really makes you appreciate your chemistry courses again.
Also very important are the clear and concise test result tables and captions under the plates. These provide a simple and easy-to-understand means of interpreting the various tests that you will perform in your microbiology lab. In a sense, I could say that a textbook isn’t really needed for a microbiology course. If your instructor provides good presentations in your lectures, all you really need is this product for your lab assignments.
I highly recommend this text both to professors and students.

Came brand new in plastic wrapping. No bent corners or missing pages. It is loose leaf so you will need a binder. Turned out to be incredibly helpful for my microbiology class, it actually has a lot of useful information without being wordy. Thought this would be another useful purchase required by a teacher but i found myself referencing it for the majority of our assignments.

Excellent atlas of microbiology! This book does a great job illustrating many microbes that you would otherwise be unable to see. I thought this manual was a good compliment to the required textbook for the course, and it was very handy for use in lab. This is a loose-leaf book, so you will need to purchase a three-ring binder to house this manual. Not a big deal, just wanted to make a note of it for potential future buyers. 🙂

This product arrived within the stated time frame in what appears to be perfect shape as advertised. I have yet to take the plastic encasing off. I do like to be able to track the item, so I make sure to either be home around delivery day, or know specific day it is arriving. The tracking information was not available. Other than that personal preference, the product is great and I will be using it very soon.

I was skeptical about purchasing this as it was only a suggested textbook for my Clinical Microbiology class, but it was definitely worth the few extra bucks. It is a great resource for all things micro! It has been very useful in studying for tests as it has great descriptions of different media, beautiful pictures, and is very well organized.

arrived as promised, in great shape, a bit cheaper compared to the same spiral bound version. It’s also nice to be able to remove single pages during lab when you’re comparing growth or experiments results. It has wonderful pictures and is a great companion if you have a Microbiology class. The larger textbooks are unable to incorporate all of these very handy images.

Best textbook I’ve ever bought

This book was more helpful than the assigned textbook for my microbiology class and it also came in handy for molecular cell biology. The content has just the right amount of detail and is written in a way that is easy to understand even if you don’t have a strong science background. I was weary that it was only available as looseleaf since looseleaf textbooks I’ve gotten in the past had very thin paper (like bible paper) but this one actually had very sturdy pages.
