GREAT book for classes & step 1
December 24, 2010

I took Step 1 in June, 2010. This book helped me for my classes as well as the boards.

PROS:
— case format helps you see problems as you’ll see them on tests, and they help you understand the concepts.
— great explanations from the master of physiology
— much more focused on teaching than the other Costanzo review book (that one is outlines w. short quizzes).
— Extensive explanations to hep you learn in the first place. More than just reviewing.

CONS:
— no color, but this didn’t affect the book’s utility.

Students rave about Costanzo’s other book, but that is a review focused tool. This book is excellent for learning and practicing the concepts. I recommend it to anyone in the first two years of med school.

Excellent for the shelf exams
January 14, 2013

This book is a good clinical book for studying for the shelf exams (of course) and provides multiple questions at a time for a given clinical case. The cases are broken down into categories based on what subject you want to review in Physiology. My only problem with it is that some of the questions seemed to elementary and it doesn’t review all of the material, though most of the cases it did review were extensive.

Not good for Shelf exam
April 24, 2010

I bought this book as a major source of studying for my physio shelf exam and that was a big mistake. While this book is a great read, and written very well, it in no way covers the detail that you have to know for the physio shelf exam. It focused a lot on problems and equations which is good because that was the part that I had the most trouble with, but in the SHELF, and probably in the USMLE, there are very few calculations you have to do. I think there were only 2 questions where I had to perform calculations on my shelf.

Great Supplement to BRS Physiology
June 27, 2011

This book contains 60 cases in physiology. At the first glance, the cases can seem dry and trivial. It made a huge difference when I, as a first year medical student, decided to ditch class and work through BRS Physiology (Board Review Series) on my own.

Here is what I do: I read BRS physiology until I cannot read on anymore. I then turn to this book to keep me motivated. If there’s a concept I haven’t read, reading the cases, problems and explanations motivated me to read the relevant sections in BRS physiology. It may not be the best way, but it definitely takes away the boredom of reading through 40 pages of a physiology text on say, the cardiology section, before you can start doing problems.

Also, the cases and problems include details that are not covered in the BRS Physiology text also by Constazo, at least not to my knowledge. She may go into more details in this book than the BRS physiology book, which allows you to see the big picture. Her explanations are thorough so you really understand what’s going on. The cool thing about the cases here is that a case may be in the cardiology section, but it also talks about how the patient’s kidneys and lungs are affected, which is what you will see in the real world!

And as an aside, if you are like me who likes to annotate on books, you really don’t need to write on this one. I annotate my BRS Physiology as I go through this. Planning to sell it as a new copy after I finish reading it. You may lose a couple of bucks while doing that, but I think it’s totally worth it.

Good cased based additional resource, not a stand alone instrument
April 21, 2016

It’s a great additional resource to look through a few cases.
Some of the cases are really REALLY overdone. The patient has every single red flag symptom. Which makes them easy to decipher in short time.
It’s just another reference. Good to see some case based learning material out there.

This is a good review book to brush up on material and patient cases from med physiology. Don’t expect this to teach you the material.
