Great book

I used this book to aid in the preparation of the PTCB. The author breaks down the material into easy to understand sections. I thought that it was a great tool to use.

Not a helpful book

I ordered this book to try to supplement the Mosby’s book I already had, but found this book not worth it’s price. It’s chapters are extrmely short, it does not have all the pharmacy law in one chapter, it’s spread out throughout the book. It does go over the customer service aspect of pharmacy, but that’s about the best I can say about this book. It DOES NOT go over the medicines, one of the most important aspects of pharmacy. There are no practice exams, no chapters dedicated to learning the calculations. You cannot use this book to study to be a pharmacy tech, it is not truly a certification exam review. I do not recommend this book to anyone trying to study to be a pharmacy tech. If you need a good book try the Mosby’s Review for Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination.

Periodic Errors and Inconcistencies
August 31, 2011
This book was purchased in preparation for taking the PTCB exam, with the hope it would be a sufficient study guide. The book includes a CD with multiple questions and practice tests. However, that is where the problem lies. There are incomplete questions that lack information necessary to correctly answer them (for instance, asking what amount of an ingredient would be needed to compound an ointment with two different stock strengths without providing a desired end amount of product) or ones that have multiple correct answers (for instance, involving the numbering system for the gauge of needles; the larger the number, the smaller the needle vs. the smaller the number, the larger needle). In addition, the CD that comes with it has numerous questions with incorrect answers labeled as correct. Basic matters of conversions such as from kilograms to pounds are not correct on occasion. Further, the book has numerous typos including the misspelling of several drug names. The practice questions for each chapter periodically have content that refers to separate sections of the book, often that come in later chapters rather than the current chapter and thus provide no easy reference to find an answer. While there is a majority of correct information in the book in terms of formulae, these sort of issues make one leery of its overall quality and accuracy. A pharmacy technician is always supposed to double check their work. It would be nice if the writers of the book had paid the same courtesy.
