Marilee S. Wintz “I am writing a thesis for an herbal certificate titled “A case study on Optimum Brain Health with Herbs” this book gives me a great start! I will need to dig into the actual studies of each herb suggested but this is an easy to read and user-friendly guide to handling brain function with herbs. What I love about herbs is how you can create a formula for your exact body, mind, spirit based on lifestyle and the medications you take. However, this is not like western medicine where you take a pill and walk away from your healing. With herbs, I believe you are more interactive with adjusting doses or formulas of herbs to find the perfect mix as well as utilizing the many wonderful body and energy techniques for holistic wellness.

It is important to point out that although you can go buy any of these herbs and try to treat yourself it is not wise!! For example, Ashwagandha which is supposedly a super herb and very safe seemed to have an adverse effect on my thyroid function. Also, I drank a cup of skullcap tea one morning and went for a hike and ended up with vasculitis on my legs. We don’t know if the tea was to blame but was the only thing I did differently that day than the hundreds of other days of hiking with no problems. There is much left to study with herb safety – So again, I highly recommend reading and using book suggestions but to take these ideas with questions to a qualified herbalist who understands how these herbs can (and do) interact with medications, body constitutions, diet, and lifestyles.”

Debbie “This book talked about 56 plants that affect your mind or emotions. The authors covered 7 calming plants, 8 memory boosters, 8 plants that lift spirits and relieve mild depression, 7 plants that promote sleep, 7 plants that relieve pain, 7 plants that combat mental fatigue and restore vitality, 5 plants that alter your consciousness, and 5 plants that help in several ways at once. Many of these plants are easy to find, like sage, peppermint, cat mint, garlic, ginger, turmeric, green tea, blueberries, rosemary, and walnuts. Others were less common and may be more difficult to find, though I’ve seen many of them at my health food store.

For each plant, there’s a picture of the plant plus general information about what it looks like and where it grows, historical uses and folklore, a summary of scientific studies, the bioactive ingredients, uses and how to take it, and safety warnings. There were also some recipes for foods, drinks, lotions, and such that used the herbs. While this is a very pretty and informative book, I’d hoped for more information about the scientific studies. These were summarized in a small paragraph or two while the history and folklore was usually two to three times as long.
