Alice Roberts is a medical doctor who has taught anatomy and conducted research into human origins. An experienced science communicator, she has been Professor of Public Engagement with Science at the University of Birmingham since 2012. Alice made her television debut in 2001 and since then has hosted various BBC science series, including Coast and The Incredible Human Journey, and several episodes of Horizon. She has written seven popular science books, including The Incredible Unlikeliness of Being, which was shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize 2015. Alice is also the author of DK’s The Complete Human Body.

Martinsci “I taught science throughout my teaching career and was always aware that the school curriculum had some major gaps, with human evolution being one. I would guess that even people with a fairly good science education would struggle to give an account of the development of Homo sapiens and their place in the evolution of hominids and I would also guess that most other people would have a very patchy knowledge. For anyone interested in human evolution this book gives a very thorough account. It contains a great deal of information and the large, clear, illustrations, make it an enjoyable book to browse. I have seen comments that there are some simplistic passaages but I don’t see that as a problem. This book aims to be accessible to all levels and so there are times when Alice Roberts explains things like fossilisation in basic terms but there are also sections which deal with more complex ideas such as determining lineage through mitochondrial DNA. I have other books on human evolution, such as the one by the Natural HIstory Museum which I found useful, but if I were going to recommend one book to give a detailed overview of human evolution I would choose this one. My 7 and 10 year old grandchildren picked it up, were fascinated, and asked a lot of questions about the various illustrations”
“This isn’t about the content itself, but the quality of the kindle version, which is terrible. It’s not unreadable, but the quality of the imaging and text is awful. Text is blurry, and the images aren’t connected well, so if it spans two pages, you won’t be able to see it complete. Sprinkled in between are index pages, which normally are found at the end of a book. Not here.
It’s amazing that they charge money for this garbage. It looks like they just did an automatic conversion, and then didn’t bother to check if it looked good. I normally enjoy these DK fact books, but I’ll buy it in print next time.
Regarding the content: it’s not exactly deep knowledge. I was hoping for something a bit more elaborate, but there are interesting stuff there, too.
Just don’t buy the kindle version.”
