Fuad “We are accustomed to talking about fixing things like the car or the boiler, but we rarely use such language when talking about the human body or its ailments. That’s why the title of this book, YOU CAN FIX YOUR BRAIN, BY Dr. Tom O’Bryan, is surely intriguing. This author not only believes this task is possible but he thinks he has the tools to accomplish it.

Before the fixing starts, we need to understand why it could be necessary. There is a strong message in this book: We people live in a sea of toxins. They are in and around us everywhere – in our foods, our water and even in the air we breath. And they come in all sorts of forms and toxicity. Our immune systems are working hard to fight back by creating antibodies, but often they cannot cope and are simply overwhelmed. But what has the brain to do with it? The fact as we understand it is that some of these toxins get into the blood. This is the same blood that goes up to the brain where the toxins often rupture the thin coatings and get some area of the brain inflamed. These inflammations are the culprits disturbing the normal functions of the brain and creating common problems like anxiety, Alzheimer’s, poor concentrations, fogginess and others.

The question then is how to prevent these toxic attacks and how to alleviate their effects. Dr. Tom (as he calls himself) provides an impressive amount of information on the subject. Basically we need to maintain a healthy body. Most of us are familiar with the health basics: Stop smoking, exercise daily if possible, minimize alcohol intake, stay hydrated, avoid sleep deprivation and watch your food intake. On this last item he feels that the biggest toxic offenders are gluten, sugar and dairy products. People concerned about toxins are always asking – What can we eat? The general rule here is more vegetables and fruits with grains and nuts. Red meat should be avoided or minimized and white meats like chicken and fish emphasized. Do we need supplements? The most important here are vitamin D, fish oil, and B12, if recommended by your doctor. It is generally understood that by addressing your body structure you automatically improve your brain function. However, no discussion about our brain is ever complete without mentioning the need for meditation. Its power and influence have been proven beyond any doubt.

The natural question here is: Can we recommend this book to other readers? There is no question about the fact that it contains a massive amount of information. Yet this in itself is a problem rather than an advantage – too many ideas and studies to keep in mind especially that some are contradictory. Excessive details crowd the pages when summaries could be more appropriate. In view of this, it may be misleading to describe it as entertaining or even relaxing. But, could it be used as a reference book? Of course it could, and much of the studies described in it could be useful for future research.
