A genetic engineering story; good start, bad ending.

September 17, 2019

This was an appropriately Forward-thinking look at the potential situations parents will be placed in as the advances in genetic engineering continue to progress more and more rapidly. The story is about Sam and his wife Annie, and the process of deciding what kind of life and personality they want for their unborn child.

I appreciated the detail that the author put into the start of the story, and how he did a great job of describing the potential genetic engineering industry that could very well be possible in the near future. This technology creates many new moral and ethical choices that society will likely have to deal with soon, and the author creates a believable example of this.

I enjoy thinking about these future possibilities, and so I really liked the first half of the story that focused on deciding what kind of child to have. The second half of the story seemed to kind of go off the rails, almost as if the author didn’t have a great or creative way to end the story. The ending was very abrupt, random, and pretty unsatisfying. I wish the author had gone a different route; maybe taken a few more pages to create a more cohesive story around this topic.

Overall, this was not one of my favorite stories in the Forward collection. I would give it maybe a 2.7/5, and I personally enjoyed several of the other books in this series much more.

If you are looking for a satisfying read, this isn’t it.

Story started off strong and with promise, but then fizzled out. While the concept of designer babies he introduced is a good topic and thought provoking, author never developed and expanded upon it. Ending did not add to or wrap up the story.

Very open ending to draw your own conclusions.

3.5 it is all a little strange stars

This was a strange story, and in the end much less wrapped up than the others I’ve read in the series.

I liked the idea of what if you could basically pick the child that you are going to have, not only the genetic traits but the probably outcome of their life. What kind of child do you choose when you get to see what their life to their 30s looks like.

It is a little disconcerting for our protagonist to look at the possible child he can have and both the challenges and successes of each. But what if Vitek isn’t just a genetically enhances fertility clinic? I think this story while well written, asks more questions that it actually answered. I’d really like to know where the story went after, more on the bartender and his family, what is Vitek really. This leaves the reader with a very open ending so they can fill in the blanks.

I myself as a reader like my ending a little more defined, but this made me curious as to what other things this author has written.

The narration of David Harbour fit this story perfectly and really encompassed the strangeness of the overall story and the main characters dilemmas

A Thought-Provoking Short Story by Amor Towles

November 23, 2019

This 46-page short story is an exploration of the potential for creating designer babies by genetic engineering, allowing potential parents to choose the physical and intellectual attributes which will potentially lead to different futures for this child over the years. Their future success and personality depending on the choices made by the parents. Choices which are made by viewing videos made by this fertility lab, Vitek, showing the outcomes of various potential choices, the potential successes and failures.

A thought-provoking short story, this is part of Digital Services Forward, a collection of six stories which also includes Randomize by Andy Weir, Summer Frost by Blake Crouch, Emergency Skin by N.K. Jemisin, The Last Conversation by Paul Tremblay, and Ark by Veronica Roth. Each story can be purchased separately, or by purchasing the collection.
