Good, predictable, needs better editing

All in all, this book is a pretty interesting, if fairly predictable, start to a new series.
The MC is a sheriff’s deputy who’s s contacted by a goddess from another world and given a chance to live on that world and be a force of law for some frontier town. He’s got grit, is somewhat intelligent, and is decent looking.
The new world he’s in has no humans other than sheriffs brought in by the goddess. The population s all animal kin, and they breed true to the mother’s beast type, and the birth rate is 3:1 towards female. Couple that with a higher death rate for males due to more dangerous jobs and fighting, and it’s more a 4:1 ratio, so plural marriage are commonplace.
The harem aspect is fairly simplistic due to the gender disparity, as well the fact that one of the sheriff’s department clerks is a bunny kin. Bunny kin are widely known for their amorous natures, so she’s a hot, frisky mess than is ready to jump the MC immediately. He makes her wait, but it’s blatantly obvious this one’s already his. His lone deputy, a fox kin woman, is taking a wait and see approach. They are quite different in nature, at least so far. But the gender ratio is making things real easy.
The book is pretty well written in places, and in other places it needs a bit of work. Poor comma use, poorly formed paragraphs that have sentences that should have been a part of the previous or subsequent paragraphs, and some really peculiar word arrangements pulled me out of my immersion.
MEH. Lack luster story, mediocre to poor editing

In this day of spelling and grammar checks built-in to word processors, it is amazing how bad the editing can get in stories. While the editing in this book is not the worst I have seen, it is far from the best. Lots of missed words, duplicated words, or outright wrong words. It is bad enough that I almost gave up several times. The poor word usage seemed to get much worse as the book got closer to the end. Either the author got tired of checking for and fixing errors, or was under some time constraint to finish. Either way things degraded the further you got in the book. Slow down and put the effort in to keep your work of high quality. You are writing a cultivation story, think of it as cultivating you storytelling super power! 🙂
With that said the world and it’s magic system seems on par with what you would expect for this type of story. Not earth shattering or new, but not totally horrible.
The author sometimes uses up a page or two with game lit type stats, but it isn’t as bad as some in this genre. Stat pages ate just lazy page filler and I usually stay away from lit-rpg stories. I decided to give this one a try, and it reaffirms my thoughts on the genre. It’s OK for a quick read if it’s done well. It can also be total junk when done wrong. This store falls squarely in the middle of that range. I find myself underwhelmed, and probably will not continue the series.
