In a traditional sense, this is not a method book; it is a hybrid teaching tool for older beginners that contains pedagogically appropriate piano pieces, technical exercises, and supplementary activities. WunderKeys Pop Staff Piano PDF

Most of the repertoire in this book is composed using our innovative Pop Staff. The Pop Staff is a modified bass staff that accompanies a treble staff. Chord symbols placed on the Pop Staff enable students to play simple left-hand pop chords, creating significantly more rewarding music than repertoire found in traditional older beginner books.

While this resource is not a typical method book, it is not a chording method book either. Older beginners WILL learn to read bass notes in the C 5-finger scale too. Through a carefully structured approach, students begin by reading notes in the right-hand C 5-finger scale only, accompanied by simple pop chords in the left hand. As they progress, notes on the bass staff are introduced and incorporated into the Pop Staff piano pieces.

By the end of this book, students will play piano pieces composed on the Pop Staff AND on the grand staff.

Sound pedagogy, unique approach, attractive to older students.

Everything the Dows create has been gold! I’ve been waiting a long time for them to expand into the age group I like to teach — young adults to senior citizens — and this new addition does not disappoint! I’m also excited that book two has just become available, I just ordered it.
The students I teach want to play for their own enjoyment, so the pop approach is comfortable for them. But the classics are not neglected here!
The consistent, pleasant layout and sequencing of the books make them an easy reference source in later lessons, and easy for introducing new beginners to the piano. It also allows my own teaching style and materials. A self-teaching adult would find this series very enjoyable.
They also provide a wealth of supplemental resources through their Facebook groups and website.
This series of four books is planned to be followed by the Elementary books, which would be acceptable to most young and older adults.

Best book for older beginners

I’ve been teaching piano for about 13 years. I’ve finally found a book that is great for older beginners, and this is it! In the first book, students learn left hand pop chords, and they read middle C through G. I know it might sound weird, but it makes the student sound good from the beginning. They will learn to read bass clef in the next book. Wunderkeys also has a ton of free resources on their website. One of those is a composing activity that goes with this book, and my students really loved that! I have used this book with 13 year olds through adult and I’ve been so pleased with it.

Perfect resource for older beginners of any age!

This resource is just perfect for upper elementary, teen and adult students who are new to the piano! By using the Pop Chord Staff system, students can play with both hands right away! The pieces have a modern sound, which students enjoy, often based on classical tunes. But that’s not all! Embedded in this book are technical exercises, sightreading, rhythm exercises and assessments. And on their website, TeachPianoToday.com, there are even more teaching resources! I currently have 4 students in this resource, ranging in age from 10-15, and they all love the book. Even the illustrations are for older beginners! My advice is if you have someone from upper elementary to adult in your piano studio, or if you are an older beginner wanting to learn piano, GET THIS BOOK!!

Perfect modern approach for teens and adults

This is a wonderful way to introduce preteens, teens and adults to piano. I am using this book with several adults and teens and they love it!!!! This is not a fake book, this is an elegant way to understand chord symbols while learning all the notes of the c major position! Many of the pieces are “pop” versions of classical music. My students are loving the music they are playing and are even composing songs using this book. Highly recommend this!

My students and I love, love, love this book and are eagerly awaiting its sequel. The songs are beautiful, and it’s so motivating and rewarding for students to be able to play beautiful music right off the bat. Only five notes to read, RH C4-G4. That’s it! What a treat to have a whole book to get used to reading these five basic notes and introduce the student to the idea of playing “chords” in the LH. (Okay, they’re open fifths, but I liken them to playing power chords on the guitar, neither major nor minor, which sound modern and lovely.) I wish I could give this book more stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Get your older students playing “real” music fast!

I’ve used this book with 2 adult students now and they both love it! Pop chords are very easy to play and understand. The first week I gave this book to my first student, she was playing a chord progression with a Middle C in the RH and she felt like she was really making music! I had her experiment with some other keys in the RH before we even learned to read more on the next page. She shyly looked at me and said “THIS IS FUN!”

An excellent resource for adult learners!

Over the past year, I’ve started taking on adult students and they happen to all have one thing in common: they’re self-taught and able to sight read their way through fairly difficult pieces, however, they all struggle with the co-ordination involved with playing both hands together.

This book is working wonders for their co-ordination by stripping everything back to basics, allowing students to focus on building their confidence with hands together playing, without the same complexity as the pieces they’d been tackling themselves. Now that I’ve been using this book for several weeks, I’m already seeing a HUGE difference in their co-ordination in their other repertoire. It’s also such a great feeling seeing their confidence grow, now that we’ve found a book that allows us to dedicate time to target exactly what they’d been struggling with!

So, if you have any older students who aren’t total beginners, this book is still such a valuable resource!

This is the older beginner piano book I’ve been looking for my entire teaching career! I couldn’t wait for this to be released and it doesn’t disappoint! From teenage beginners to adults (either beginners or lapsed learners) this book is EVERYTHING us piano teachers want and MORE! Engaging, well-paced and containing beautiful pieces (some of which will be familiar – another bonus!) Using the “Pop chord” method to begin with, You or your older learners will be playing hands together immediately! As the book progresses, you’ll also find instruction on the notation of the Left Hand so this book really does do it all! I currently have a teenager and two adults (one of which just turned 80 years old!) in this book and we can’t wait for book two!!

I have been so very pleased with this innovative method book for older beginners. I love the pacing of the book, the creative addition of the Wunderkeys innovation of a “Pop Staff” and the ways students can embrace making sounds they love early in their musical experience.

This book builds on success as students explore C Major alongside Pop Staff Chords (open 5ths). I am a fan of the 5ths first to give time for technical development and understanding.
