I am glad to see another piece of literature that delineates how intricately the mind and body are woven together. However, I found that as I was reading, I was asking several questions such as: how many people do NOT have some sort of attachment dysfunction or trauma or mini traumas that impact them growing up? Are we too easily lumping people into types who have disease because the pool is quite vast?
I also thought that while the author clearly states these are facts based on research and not a moral judgment, it is pretty challenging to not sink into one’s own self blame after reading this. I also felt that the emphasis was on emotional pathology only and the ways people have died as a result.
He did have his seven A’s of healing at the end but to me the majority of the book felt hopeless. I do agree that emotional repression can contribute to disease and I would have preferred more stories of health and healing included in the chapters.
A more appealing and helpful approach to me is to understand that the body is indeed speaking to us. We each have our own task of questioning what the message is and what we are going to do about it. This might include physical changes such as diet, supplements etc. It also may include deep emotional work stemming from childhood attachment issues.
That question and our answers should be very unique and individualized. So while I thought there was value to this book, chapter after chapter of reading how people’s psychological pathology contributed to their disease left me feeling more hopeless.

I now consider this book, along with Daring Greatly by Brene Brown, as required reading for humans. I was on page 20 when I knew that I’d be re-reading this book again once I finished it!
As a healthcare practitioner I’ve suspected that emotions are at play in some of my clients who are doing ‘all the right things’ and just don’t get the results we expect. I heard Dr. Gabor Mate on a podcast talking about this issue and was thrilled to see a book that includes clinical experience, interviews, and the research studies.
It’s fascinating to me how much emotional repression we can be unconscious of and this book has inspired me to do some digging into myself. He describes patterns that I recognized in myself for the first time and I want to address them before I end up ill. There’s not a lot of advice on how to do this in this book, but it provides the motivation to start figuring that out with a therapist or other modalities. When the Body Says No PDF

Modern medicine still breaks down ailments and illnesses into individual problem sections to prescribe pills for or perform a surgery on and acts as if the Mind is somewhere in space and not the body itself. A feeling is by definition the body’s reaction to perceived threat or harm or pleasure and love. The body does not lie.
His case studies were limp reports, spontaneous remissions breezed over. His last chapter on “how to heal” was surprisingly dull.
The body is always on our side, it is always fighting for balance and health. Emotions have a chemical reality and flow through our systems, any weakened or susceptible part could become “diseased” and if we were to alter the emotional chemicals it makes sense the body might be more successful in healing.
However, if you live near a nuclear waste site or are filled with toxins I’m not sure getting one’s anger in line is going to cure radiation poisoning. dr Mate dances around the issue of cause and it leaves his other ideas weaker because of this.
I have dementia and bought the book because he mentioned in a lecture Alzheimer’s was prevalent in people who were givers and could not feel their anger properly or efficiently. He brings up caregiver distress hanging on years after the dementia patient dies. He also promoted the modern idea people with dementia become zeros, empty vessels and so on which is not true. Many people who do not speak for years speak fluently near end of life and retained all their memories which modern medicine thinks is gone when the brain shrinks. Apparently not. I believe caregiver burnout is not the problem of the patient but the toxic view of the dementia process which results in abandonment in real time by family and friends. Usually one person gets stuck, isolated, with a person they believe is becoming a zero hollow pointless burden when we can not name them or hold a job. People with dementia can write and speak poetically and excel at art, they recall music, and when my father was dying of ALZ we communicated with our eyes and touch.
If you are looking for a book on how to heal your own disease, esp the immune diseases, this book lacks the map. It felt like a very dry soulless take on how misconceptions developed in infants and children in reaction to fear and neglect carry into adulthood as a lens which distorts the perception of danger throughout their lives which sometimes contributes to disease esp autoimmune varieties.
The book is no comfort for the fear of being diagnosed, losing all you had or were etc and the expense and burden of having a disease. I did not read enough reviews to know if people found help learning to say NO when needed or if they understood their illness better.
