Not my favorite among the MinaLima classic editions

I usually am impressed with the MinaLima editions, but I don’t think this one measures up to the creativity demonstrated in other MinaLima books.

First of all, in Baum’s 1900 book, Dorothy is 10 years old. In this edition, she resembles a petite adult, and she and Toto appear to share the same hairdo. Yikes!

In the first part of this book, (before arriving at the Emerald City) there’s a LOT of blue in the illustrations. I like blue, but the illustrations include large areas of the same color of blue, which sometimes overpowers the illustrations and makes them less interesting. Introducing different shades of blue would have helped here.

As for the interactive elements, I think there are several missed opportunities. For example, there’s a cool illustration of the tornado that scoops up Dorothy and Toto, but it isn’t interactive. What? In addition, the big green doors/gates that Dorothy and company encounter after arriving in the Emerald City aren’t impressive or interactive. Lastly, the hot air balloon that Oz takes off in isn’t interactive either. No way! Nonetheless, the book does include some cool green glasses.

This book is so beautiful and the materials feel so high quality. I have this to multiple people for Christmas and they all loved it. Wonderful, fun way to make any adult feel like a kid again with their favorite book!

Mina Lima Should Publish All of the Books.

Mina Lima is one of my favorite literary discoveries. They are the husband and wife duo behind a number of stunning illustrated classics. Our family is slowly collecting all of them (we can’t wait to pick up Alice in Wonderland!) after purchasing the first two Harry Potter books, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and the Hans Christen Anderson fairy tale collection. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz does not disappoint. Mina Lima uses color creatively to represent the various lands within Oz. The book includes a fun pair of green specatcles for children to try on and experience emerald vision. The pages are thick and have a lovely old parchment appearance that makes them fun to turn. Best of all, Mina Lima goes all out. The book is filled with color and graphics. So often, I feel that illustrated classics look promising on the outside and then have very few illustrations on the inside. Not so with this edition. Nearly all of the pages include some candy for the eye, making every turn of the page special and surprising. Mina Lima….have you ever considered making a special edition of The Princess Bride? I would buy it in a heartbeat. 😉

COLLECTABLE EDITION OF “OZ”, BUT HANDLE WITH CAUTION AND CARE

This is a handsome, Emerald green hardcover Edition of L. Frank Baum’s original fantasy classic. On the plus side, this is the complete, unabridged text of Baum’s first “Oz” book; followed by 13 more written by Baum. There is a lot more to the Land Of Oz than what is shown in the famous 1939 MGM movie.
The story remains timeless, but the 2021 Mini Lima illustrations strive to get as far away from 1939, or any other “Oz” interpretation we knew before. The results are quirky and decidedly offbeat. The Scarecrow looks like a sick clown, The Tin Man resembles a White Knight piece from a chess game, etc.
The “Interactive Elements, including a map of the Land Of Oz, a fold-out Yellow Brick Road, Emerald Green glasses, Silver Slippers, and a melting Witch, point out the fragile nature of “pop up/pop out” animated, interactive features. “OZ” fans will love this edition and, of course, handle it with caution and care. This is an admirable, “COLLECTABLE edition” that isn’t quite as accessible as it might have been.

I have every single book by them, and all of them are absolutely a work of art. I love to collect beautiful books, and once I found them, I had to have them all! If you love illustrated, pretty aesthetics, or are a fan of pop-up books, don’t pass any of their books up.

I gave this to my friend as a baby shower gift. It is such a special, I refractive edition of the book. The pop ups are so beautifully done. I absolutely recommend this version of the classic book.
